With the official start of the 2013-14 season less than a week away, there is time for at least one more analysis of UConn's incredible roster. Consider the attached list of players with a key statistical "goal/target" that might help make a wonderful season even more magical. Of course, UConn will be just fine even if no one reaches these made up milestones. But imagine if they do.....

1. MoJeff = 100 steals. Moriah had 52 steals in just 677 minutes last season. With her incredible speed, many of her thefts result in an easy 2 pts for the good guys. At an average of slightly more than 2.5 per game, her 100 steals would cover the loss of Faris' team leading 96 and might translate into 70 or so easy buckets. Run, MoJeff, run...

2. Stewie = 100 blocks. Stewart led the team a year ago w/ 74 blocked shots, mostly in the second half of the season. Her shot blocking ability alters the way our guards can play their man on defense, impacts opponents' ability to drive or shoot in the lane and limits opposing players shot selection. Again, just 2.5 blocks per game would do the trick.

3. Dolson = 60 or less turnovers. Stef is the best passing (and shooting) center in WBB and Geno loves to run the offense through her. The result was 117 assists, 3rd highest on the team. But, her 86 turnovers tied for worst. Less turnovers equals more assists and more points. This is your year, Stef!!

4. KML = 125 3's. Kaleena led the world making 118 treys on 49.2% shooting. She is a knife in the heart of opponents who fail to make her the priority on defense. Her quick release and accuracy can put a game out of reach by halftime. But pay too much attention to her and Stewie, Stef, Morgan, et al will kill you. Pick your poison.

5. Banks = 800 minutes. Brianna played just 359 minutes before injury ended her breakout season. With rehab nearly complete, it would be awesome to see 800 quality minutes this season from this talented lefty. Take it slow, then pour it on.

6. Tuck = 75 offensive rebounds. Morgan grabbed 120 rebounds as a freshman, including 41 offensive boards. KML had 85, but in twice the minutes. More minutes = more offensive boards. And after this summer, the idea of Tuck w/ the ball, six feet from our basket, just seems unfair to opponents. (Not really.) Breakout season for MTuck.

7. Hartley = 45% shooting. Bria's accuracy fell from 46% to 39% last season, including 29% from 3 pt range. Raising that back to 45% (37% from 3) would help the offense tremendously. Hartley's not shy, she took 302 shots in 987 minutes w/ 148 3's (2nd most to KML). Come on Bria, you can do it!!

8. Stokes = 180 points. Kia is a defensive beast, 113 rebounds and 39 blocks in just 342 minutes. However, she only scored 88 points and limits Geno's options in tight games. Her shooting % was best on the team at 66%. Watch for Kia to shine.

9. Chong = 12 mins/game. There is no pressure on Saniya to score, rebound or lead the team in any statistic. Give Geno 12 quality minutes each game and MoJeff and Hartley stay fresh and Banks can ease back into full game contact. Saniya is gonna be awesome.

10 &11. TLaw and Pulido are the icing on the cake. Work hard, have fun, savor the minutes and buckle up for a great ride. No expectation, just enjoy.....

Thoughts? Go Huskies..!!!

With the official start of the 2013-14 season less than a week away,

First official game of the season is November 9. That's "less than a week away?" Even the first exhibition game is still a little less than 3 weeks away.

If Stewart and KLM average 18
Hartley and Dolson average 14
_____
The 64 points above = the total for this group in the final Louisville game.

Morgan averages 12
Mo averages 8
Banks averages 7
Chong averages 6
Stokes averages 5
The walk-ons average 4

That comes out to over 100
I thought I was being conservative.
Where have I gone wrong?

I said start of season, not first game. :(. Why do you think it is called "First Night"? I hope your Dodgers lose.

P.S. The UConn website says, "The University of Connecticut men's and women's basketball programs will tip-off the 2013-14 season with "First Night" on October 18th." Maybe they got it wrong too.

That 1988 World Series over the steroids-infused Oakland As makes the Dodgers fine by me, even though I'm not a fan.

And as long as the Red Sox don't win it all, I'm set. :)

David - nice post! And I do not see any unrealistic goals in what you listed - as you say, they might not hit them all, but nothing there looks undoable.

Funny, I've always thought of the season as starting with game 1. In baseball, spring training is nice but it isn't the start of the season. If it's just a matter of semantics.....

As for the Dodgers, so far looks like you may get your wish.

It's the difference between casual fans and serious fans.

I know some casual fans who asked what I did in the summer. This was on a week when with multiple USA games, and I was struggling to keep up. But some fans do wait for the regualr season to start, and some even barely pay attention until conference play starts. To each their own.

We have 162-game baseball seasons (followed by about three weeks of playoffs), 82-game NBA seasons (and lengthy playoffs), plus about 30 NCAA football bowl games and "March Madness" stretching well into April. Is it any wonder that many fans don't much bother watching much of anything until playoffs start?

On the other hand, many are armed with a clicker this weekend so they can switch constantly from MLB to NCAA FB to NBA to NHL to NFL and maybe (maybe!) find a moment for the family.

No wonder there is some confusion about when the wcbb season officially starts.
