Biggest things I got out of this article was that JC is not a kindle guy and he may be attending the American Idol finale. WTF?

Oh.. and Happy Birthday coach!

Amore did a really nice job with this article.
Two Calhoun quotes stand out for me from a guy who has a real secure sense of himself:

"I know there are things I could have done better. Should have done better, should have not done. But most everything I've ever tried, I tried for the right reasons. If it didn't go right, I'll fix it, but I can't change that now."

and this is classic:

"If you confront me, I'm going to confront you back," Calhoun says, "and I don't know what's wrong with that."

Amazing to think about the impact JC has had on my life - from all the excitement and joy of being a fan of a winning program, to the increased value of my UConn diploma, to the many good times I've been able to share with my father through our shared love for college basketball - which would not have happened for me if I didn't get hooked on UConn ball in the dream season when I had just recently started at UConn.

In short, thanks Coach! And Happy Birthday!

Nice well written article from Dom.
Am still a bit baffled by JC possibly going to the American Idol finale - maybe we have recruits he's visiting on the west coast?

Anyway, Happy Birthday Coach!

Must be a guest judge. He'll give them the quick hook if their voice cracks.

When he gets to the office, as he did Tuesday, to find a voice mail from Caron Butler, a former Husky now with the Los Angeles Clippers, saying "Happy Birthday, Pops," Calhoun knows why he has stayed so long.

Thanks for posting this! What a great way to start the day(especially after I had just read an article in the Waterbury paper about the new, interim Commissioner of the Big East...which,honestly, caused some nausea re: what this league is going through. But,hey, we have JC and nobody else does so it's all good!). At any rate....a very Happy Birthday coach!!! And we all know you ain't goin' nowhere. It's not who you are. When the program gets up off the mat and floors all the critics with a nasty-assed right hook, then, maybe, you'll call it a day. Wouldn't have it any other way.

P.S. Every program in the country should be so fortunate to have just one Caron Butler.

GO HUSKIES!!!

I can't express the gratification that I have for what this man has accomplished in his career in words. I can't claim to know Calhoun personally, but based on his actions from a far, there is nobody I model myself after more than him.

The fact that he's coaching at 70, with sketchy health, tells you all you need to know about the guys love for the kids and the program. The list of amount of lives this guy has turned around is countless, as is the number of guys who would step in front of a bus for him.

It will be a sad, but also celebratory day when he finally decides to hang it up.

This isn't the first time I've read about Dean Smith's influence on Calhoun. You can kind of see how UConn's program has reflected that of North Carolin's. Both are systems with frequent NBA talent that have a wide attacking style of play. We haven't reached the same level of success that UNC has but I can definitely see some similarities.
