Losing Ollie is a huge threat to future revenues. Pay the man something reasonable (what's the going rate for NCAA championship coaches?) extend the term then sit back and enjoy the ride.

IMO we've got to pay him reasonable-plus. Although his loyalty and roots in the area are in our favor, he is so far above market-level even for a NCAA championship coach right now imo because of so many additional factors unique to him, including his youth; his connection to the school and the program; his NBA connections and pedigree; his incredible, sterling reputation in every corner of the known universe--and even the known unknown universe; the fact that he is one of very few African American head coaches; and the fact that he has soundly proven himself as a rock-solid performer in every metric by which you could possibly measure the job.

KO does not want us to break the bank, and we shouldn't. But he should be paid at a level that at least recognizes his well-above-average worth to this or any other program. You could not parody the level of across-the-board positive reactions people have to him and do it justice, because the reality of it is just so silly and over-the-top itself.

1. Where did I say I'm against anything to get more revenue? I am against the school cutting off it's nose (football) to spite it's face (future revenue generation), when there is every indication that the Admiration has a particular focus, vis a vie academics and athletics over the next 18 - 42 months.

2. What I am also saying is that I think Warde Manuel and Susan Herbst have a better handle on the Athletic Department's current and future cash flow than you.

The only jobs I could see him leaving for are either OKC this offseason (still think its unlikely, but wouldnt shock me), the Clippers when Doc is done or the Lakers in a few years when they're less of a mess.
 
College seems like such a better gig if you get a big time job, are making good money and can be there for the next ~20 years. Hopefully that's what Ollie is thinking about and not all the other offers that may come his way. There is no job security in the NBA and dealing with salary cap and egos would be brutal.
 
Think the contract will be in the near to 2+ million range. I don't think he goes anywhere in the near future certainly not another college. I also don't think Coach Ollie will rest on his laurels and if he gets another ship in the next decade i definitely could see him try his hand at the NBA. he'd be in his late 40s early 50s his kids will be done with college it would be the perfect time to make a switch with head held high if that's what he wanted .

If CT can afford to blow at least 110 mill of its own money and nearly 500 mil of funds from the Fed to build 9 miles of bus route that no-one but Malloy and the construction workers unions wanted in the first place, we can afford to give Ollie whatever it takes to make him content for the rest of his career.
 
I don't believe KO will leave for the NBA for more money. If he left for the NBA it would mean that is where he wants to leave his mark.

I can't see UConn opening the vault for KO. It would be an insult to JC and GA. That said I believe he will be taken care of for a very long time. KO realizes the financial situation UConn is in and frankly, I don't believe money is what his life is about.

KO will look at the big picture and I think his contracts will be loaded with incentives, plus a very fair base. KO has a chance to build a legacy like no other. How many coaches in the NBA can say that or have done that?

Throw in his strong spiritual beliefs and I think KO believes he was put on this planet to change young men's lives.

I think $1.8 mill is a good number.

$1.8 mill is what North Carolina is paying Roy Williams and Syracuse is overpaying Boeheim. However, Memphis is paying Pastner $2.65 million (what?). Pastner has 0 championships, Boeheim 1 and Williams 2.

To pay KO the same or more money than Geno after 2 years as HC would be an insult to Geno, IMO. Women's BB may not mean as much but, after tonight, 9 NC's in any sport means a lot.

Maybe, but it's also what the market bears. You have to meet the market. Market for men's coaches is far higher than women's coaches. Highest paid men's basketball coach is K at $9.7mil for 2014. The equivalent highest paid women's coach (Geno) is at $1.95mil for 2014.

A lot of you are going to learn this the hard way if UConn doesn't come up with a lot more revenue in the next 2 years.

Incentive-laden contract with 2.5 base for at least 5-6 years (with a provision to kick up to 3+ if we get into the ACC or B1G in this timeframe)
 
5 years, 14MM = 2.8MM per year. That would put him in the top 10 in the nation for college coaches. It would give him very, very nice security for life. Nothing wrong with redoing his contract in another year or two if he continues to prove himself.

Hoiberg just got a raise to $2.6MM. With the new round of TV contracts kicking in for the P5, I think basketball coach salaries will reset around $3MM/year for the top 30 coaches. That is where UConn needs to get Ollie. Not sure where it is going to come from.

I don't think anyone is concerned about right now. Manuel said he's going to offer him a new deal and wants him to be our coach for a long time. The question is where that contract will land him, in terms of years and dollars. It's a legitimate question, and an interesting one imo, especially in light of other recent contracts.

I still say Geno's deal has zero relevance to the discussion. Different sport, different market. And I still think close to $3M/year for 5 to 10 years is where it will end up.

There will not be 30 coaches making $3MM or more next year. There won't even be 20. Right now I believe it is 8.
