I chuckle at this thought: I went from worrying about enough talented recruits being interested in UConn and UConn winning the recruiting battles...no pun intended...for plan A, B, C, etc players. Now I'm worried that KO will be patient and select the best possible recruits that are talented and fit our system.
Worried is too strong a word as to how I feel. And I have a ton of confidence that KO has and will continue to focus on the right type of recruits that fit the programs needs. I'm sure in some cases he'll tell 2 or more recruits that he likes that whoever accepts the ship first gets it, while a few others he really wants badly he'll wait out. That's how JC did it and it worked well for us.
I find recruiting fascinating. Some programs got greedy and would hold out for a group of blue chip recruits even though the stakes were high having to go up against the other top programs. Zona is one that comes to mind near the end of Lute's run. He held out and lost recruits to the likes of dook, UNC, etc, and ended up settling for reaches or ended up with open ships.
I don't envy high major head coaches who have to read the tea leaves as to when to pull the trigger for their second or third choices or hold out for the one(s) they want most. With all this said, UConn had won many off its championships on the backs of plan B or C recruits such as Emeka, Kemba and Bazz. None of them were JC's top choice at their positions and in most cases turned out to be either better players than the ones he missed out on or we ended up dodging a bullet where the preferred recruit(s) ended up not qualifying or left after one season before their value to the program could be realized.
