If true, I respect that, even if Ollie is just sending a message to the NBA owners. I believe Mark Jackson and Jason Kidd as a first year coaches only got 8$ and $10 million respectively over 4 years. Its a wonder how Kerr 'deserved' so much. I won't speculate but I have a feeling why.

It maybe a publicity stunt (drawing attention), protest or effectively pricing himself out of consideration.

Whatever his reason he is drawing attention to the contract.

BTW: Good for Kerr but something is happening here.

My first reaction was disappointment, as I did not think this was about money for the near future. I read the article to find out it's all third hand speculation, not a single shred of anything close to evidence that "Ollie looking for 5 million .... " None. Nada. No one should bother getting their dander up over this.

Kerr didn't deserve $5M but he had some leverage of the Knicks job and an established relationship with the Warriors owner.

The going rate for first time NBA coaches with no experience is $2M-$3M a year.

Kerr had a really sweet deal with TNT so the Warriors needed to make a significant offer to pry him away. That and the Knicks wanted him BAD

Realistically, how high could UConn go? Could they offer him 3plus?

It's funny because Kerr was a terrible GM and who knows if he can even coach. Just throwin money at him because he's golf buddies with you?

Getting into a P5 conference will be key in keeping up with coaches contracts. I'm sure KO next contract will be partially paid from the funds received from the Big East breakup. But those funds will run out over the next few years. I forget the payout schedule.

I have to admit that I wasn't too concerned with KO leaving until I read this article. Once numbers start to be thrown around, that's a clear indication that talks have been serious enough. $5M/yr just happens to be the magic number that I had in my head that UCONN could not/would not match if a NBA team offered. I realize this is just some guy reporting "rumors" but, nonetheless, the magic number is spot on with what I've thought would be the carrot that lured KO away.

My hope is that KO stays, signs a $3M/yr extension for 5-10 years, with an auto bump up by $500K-$1M/yr for each National Championship. The day if/when we are invited into a P5 conference and have more money available, we raise him to the magic number of $5M/yr (base) to make it tough for any NBA team to lure him away. I also agree with Warde that I'd like to see a reasonably large buyout in the new extension. KO won't have to pay it - that part would be paid for by the NBA team anyway. But I want whatever NBA team that lures KO (if they lure him) away to pay up.

Seems like the going rate for first time NBA coaches having other options is now $5M.

The going rate is what someone's willing to pay. Which is $5m per for Steve Kerr.

Ollie's rate could be north of that.

Someone in the know told me Ollie is going to run for president and already has offices set up in Iowa.
He has my vote.

warde doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency to get him signed, just get it done and end this circus. How hard can this really be?

Being a GM for a while there, I get the feeling Kerr had a lot more connections around the league then Jackson or Kidd. It also didn't hurt Kerr's cause to have one of his former coaches take over a prominent franchise with a coaching vacancy. The GM thing is key, though. With the growing emphasis on analytics within the league, a lot of GM's/owners want everybody from the bottom up on the same page. In Golden State especially, there seemed to be a disconnect between Jackson and the front office. I imagine having somebody on the bench with a background in basketball operations makes things a lot easier for the front office.

It may be very hard if Manuel is shooting at a moving target based on which teams are interested and an evolving market for new coaches.

Quite frankly Warde has always been reactive when it comes to KO; not a good way to inspire loyalty that would turn down $5m a year. I think it's 60/40 he stays not more than that.

The circus is good publicity for Ollie and UConn. Well done, Warde!

Warde's job right now is sell Ollie on staying for 2.5-3 mil/year guaranteed for 5-10. If Ollie wants to be a hired gun, the league will out bid us sooner or later and that will be that. I'll take Ollie over any coach in the game but I don't want him to be making Calipari money because I don't want ours to be that program. Ollie says he loves the University and I believe it so come on Warde, make him feel the love back!

He's not going to be making Calipari money because we don't have the SEC TV contract, not because we wouldn't want to.
