The biggest take away from Azzi's performance was the fact that she got most all her points without attempting 3's. This is huge. We know she can be lethal from the 3 pt line. If she continues to show off her 2 pt game, defending her will be nearly impossible. Teams won't be able to send defenders darting to the 3 pt line without risking Azzi going by them. I can only guess, but I am sure the coaching staff reminded her that she is not a one dimensional player. Great job by them. Let's hope she continues to wow us with her 2 pt game. The 3's will get easier too.

Easy to be super critical of this game. I don't want to ever contribute to hyperbole so I'll just say, this was the worst win in the entire history of the program.

Hyperbole, you say? Either you have not watched Uconn basketball for very long or you have very short memory.

Sarah is now 8 for 32 from 3. How many games until you are what your shooting percentage says you are? Just maybe being the second leading scorer and assister while leading the team in steals, blocks and rebounds is good enough?

I mentioned 2-3 games ago in one of the game chats that it looks to me like Sarah's 3-pt shot is a little flat and I think I was laughed at.

What happened to tough players with killer instinct. We haven't seen anyone like that since Stewwie left. Is it Geno's coaching style in his older years? Has he grown soft so the team has become soft? No reason at all that this wasnt a 35 plus point win.

LOL - nah , no hyperbole there.

15 assists on 31 fg, not normal; 18 TOs too many; 14 PFs also too many...but a W
We got knocked down/almost out...but they s&cked it up and got the W.
Well done.

Caveat - I didn't see the game, watched via Live Stats.
Ole Miss on defense overplayed the perimeter without giving much help. If we beat someone off the dribble, it was a red carpet to the basket. But they harassed the ball and denied passing lanes so we more or less took what we were given.

In the first half, we scored 37 points and 30 were in the paint (compared to 2 for Ole Miss). There was one Paige 3 and four FTs. We ended up with a 48-18 advantage in points in the paint so it leveled off in the second half.

Third quarter was more than a little problematic - it took us a long time to right the ship. Always thought that one key to being a championship team is that other teams maybe have 6-0 or 10-2 runs on you and that’s that. Sometimes you have to have crunch time urgency in the middle of the game

.-.
Fudd was the difference maker. Sarah should not have the green light at this time.
How about a little patience.......this was Strong's sixth college game......Geno knows how good a three-point shooter she is and the last thing he's going to do is discourage her from shooting it at this point in the season......as a matter of fact he'd be far more concerned if she stopped shooting it.....

Q not played by Geno; not mentioned in the game posts. Is she lost forever?

Didn’t get to watch the game live. From some of the posts here, you would think UConn lost. Ole Miss pressures opponents into a fast paced, up tempo game that forces turnovers. It appears that’s exactly what happened in the 3rd qtr.

Other than that, UConn pretty much controlled the game for the other 3 qtrs. While the Huskies didn’t shoot it well from the arc, they took Ole Miss to school when it came to player movement and back door cuts, so much so that UConn reminded me of Pete Carill’s Princeton teams.

This was a really good win for UConn. I picked the Huskies to win by 13 and Good Golly Miss Molly, they won by 13. :)

I’m at a loss for how to evaluate this game. Was the third quarter a fluke? Or does it showcase that there are bigger issues? The turnovers and the bad quarter reminded me of the Ohio State game.

One of the things I really was hoping for was good performances from shade and KK. And we didn’t get those performances. KK in particular. Take a look at her season stats when you get a chance. Anyone alarmed? Is it too soon to be alarmed? Curious what you guys think.

I suspected a Fudd break out game was coming. I think she is probably electric in practices. And UConn sure needed it in the third quarter when the offense went awry.

I like how El Alfy played tonight. She has bounced back well from that Fairleigh Dickinson game with this tournament.

Unlucky that Todd Williams was 4-4 from three. She came into this game shooting 17% from there.

I am happy we are done with Flo hoops.
On a typical UConn team KK and Ash are role players and I think Geno is trying to force them and Chen into roles they just aren't ready to handle.

So, what’s the solution? Is there one?

I didn't see the game but looking at stats-- this is what we should like to see- our big 3. As Azzi gets going playing consiistently, and Paige is consistent, once UCONN gets Sarah more of a "prolific scorer," the entire game for UCONN should explode. The others for sure will do well different games all led though by our Big 3. On occassion players like Chen, Ash, KK, Jana etc will play extremely well as teams begin to "sell out" more on the Big 3.

Leading into the season we all talked about our inside players would make it impossible for opponents to shut down our 3 pt. shooting. Maybe it was the gym setting for this tournament (I hope we can get better holiday tourneys in the future) but we are not going to be the team we thought we were going to be unless we pick up our shooting outside the arc. Three of 14 today isn't going to cut it when we play teams like ND. I thought we might get results like tonight early in the season as the new players learned how to play Uconn basketball, but I didn't think we would be struggling from outside.

Hopefully Sarah improves from her 25% 3 pt. average as she continues to adjust to college basketball, and why is Ashlynn only taking a couple shots a game? The last few games she is the player who got us started from outside, now she is virtually absent from the offense.

I hope we can develop a killer instinct quickly because we are going to need it as we ramp up the quality of our opponents the rest of this month. There really is no excuse for our third quarter. I bet Geno was planning to use Allie and Morgan during that period, but our regulars made that impossible. Mississippi is not that good to make us play a limited roster and Paige is not going to be able to continue playing 37-40 minutes without wearing down, same with Sarah.

When the wheels were coming off in the third quarter Azzi drove her rescue ambulance in and took over. Paige a few minutes later woke up also from her funk and joined in. Jana put on her game face at that point also and the bleeding stopped and all was right in the world. Personally I think the team was told to beware of the fouls and that made them tentative. Once they got into the fourth quarter they relaxed and resumed their good playing. This was a great team builder.

My initial thought for this team was once Azzi came back you would need to insert her for Chen and bring Jana in for Ash. Tonight UConn was the better team and when they were big gave Ole Miss a look they couldn't defend. Going forward I expect Ash and KK to come off the bench to spell Paige or Azzi and unfortunately Chen will move down the line a ways.

If Geno continues to try to play small ball they will have serious problems and one of them will be in a couple weeks when they play ND. I love the way Sarah plays and I love her ability to catch the ball. Her skills coupled with her size make her a mismatch that forces the other team to make a choice. Azzi and Paige will be amazing but it is time to take off the training wheels and let them go.

When another team plays well, it is not necessarily because UConn played badly. They were blowing this team out in the first half; like a young team, they lost the intensity in the third quarter but regained the momentum in the fourth. Contrast that with USC, which almost lost and most likely should have.. In the interim, Mississippi has blown out every one of their opponents; the team is severely underrated by the polls. Instead of looking for negatives, why not talk about the great play of Azzi and Jana as well as the superb defense in the first half, etc.

So, what’s the solution? Is there one?
Yes those two proved last year that they were incapable of playing basketball at a high level.......it's a shame UConn didn't make it into the NCAA tournament because of their lousy play........I think they should just sit out for the rest of this season so that doesn't happen again........;):)

IMO exatct opposite.

Yanna will most likely play next Tuesday against Holy Cross . Let's reserve judgment until she and Aubrey are in the mix. At that point Uonn will have a 10-player rotation.

Muhl and Edwards were on the court with them last year. Muhl, Edwards, and Paige commanded the lions share of attention. It was a lot easier to be a complimentary piece last year.

This is a totally different team. Look at Shade’s stats in the last several big games:

Shade tonight - 2 points
North Carolina - 3 points
Iowa - 5 points
USC - 5 points
Duke - 0 points

KK is averaging only 3 points per game this season.

I think it is fair to take a look at this and have some concerns.

Only went with 8 player rotation is this competitive game. Q is currently in the 11 player rotation. You will see her often in Conference games
Frankly, Q did not play well against Oregon state. I would have been surprised to see her tonight.

Fast athletic guards, and big strong posts have been UConn kryptonite in recent years.

Ole Miss gave us the chance to deal with the guards. Great prep for ND and the new Tenn.

Azzi and Jana got rolling. Jana, 8 pts 9 rebounds for the fake double double and 100% fg vs a power 4 tourney team. Azzi 18 clutch points.

Sarah will keep her green light from 3. She pulls defenders out from under the basket.

Chen, KK and Ash were simply swallowed up by the Miss guards. They need more experience with that type of athlete. This is where Azzi's experience and talent is so important.
