He is the key. During January losses he look lost and lackadaisical with passes. Now looks in control and its becoming his team. This is the player I thought we were getting. Nice job Tristen.

Didn't know Newton's first name was Alleyne, so I merged it with the game thread

Impressive win, but we still need a ball handler that can break the press and hit free throws. That's our one flaw. I get nervous as he'll when we get pressed. What I wouldn't give for a Taliek Brown or Ricky Moore on this roster.

This. Hurley deserves props for reversing course on the AJax as point guard experiment. When Newton initiates - either for himself or for others - good things usually happen.

This. We saw him getting on guys in the huddles a couple times. Seems like he’s done being complacent.

Newton has become the main facilitator of our offense, very ball dominant, and this is where he thrives.

Agree with everything said above. Newton has just been fantastic last 4-5 games. Hard to believe we were debating about who should play PG a month ago.

He’s passing, scoring, drawing fouls and defending well. I listened to people say we had no PG and well, that was not a good take. Key to Tristan is that calm demeanor. He doesn’t get rattled, doesn’t panic. It inspires a lot of confidence. Just needed the team to trust him.

that debate was justified, but it no longer is. The only time we had trouble with the press tonight was when the ball was NOT in his hands. When he had it, he avoided the trap by changing pace, changing angles, knowing where it was about to come from and didn't pick up his dribble. And his recent willingness to drive and finish/draw fouls is causing defenses to cheat to him in the lane which opens up the outside game. He's changing the way teams have to defend.

Yes, but it only works with Newton playing well, it was never a coincidence that when tristen was down aj struggled and pressed. There is a whole is greater than sum of parts alchemy there, and THATS what makes us good.

I think a lot of this is Hurley freeing up the players to be players again. We are not the same one trick ponies (feed Sanogo and wait) that we were a month ago...
