Official Men's Hockey Recruiting Thread

Unless I missed it, I would be looking for them to sign a goalie somewhere along the way to join the program next season. A little surprised they don't have anybody. Right now they have 3, but Grogan graduates and Cunumale has never faced a shot as far as I know. Robbie Nichols looks like a pretty nice player, but you can't go into a season without any backup. Teams typically carry 3.

Ask and you shall receive. I like this kids thinking. He wants to be part of building something and we can give him that!

Thanks! Very cool. I guess I missed this earlier. Sounds like a great kid and a real competitor.
Yeah, it's weird because the same site doesn't list him as an incoming recruit yet but the interview is over a month old?

Proud and excited to announce that I have committed to play my college hockey for the University of Connecticut! #Huskies

Johnny Austin

Austin comes from the same team, Benilde, as recent commit Spencer Naas.

Will Moran ‏@goalmouthradio 56m
Austin is categorized as a puck moving defenseman, left hand shooting, listed at 5'9'' and 180 lbs.

Austin was also named to the preseason Mr. Hockey watch list, which Naas is a finalist for by @OTBPuckWatch

Sounds like hockey recruiting is going very well. Huskymedic, or anyone else in the know, could you devise a chart, indicating all future commits, where they're from, and when they are projected to enter UConn.
That would be greatly appreciated, as it seems hockey recruiting is much more complex than other sports.

I'll see if we can get a better list put together but this is a start. This doesn't have the recent Minnesota kids or Garin included yet... http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/recruits/list/Atlantic-Hockey/1/conf

Listened the UConn/PC game on a radio stream and it was amazing, great win! When we join Hockey East next year what is the TV coverage like? Does Hockey East have a contract or will we go with one of our partners like SNY?

I am a big UConn football and bball guy but look forward to supporting hockey.

Pretty sure HE has a TV deal w/ NBC Sports as well.

NESN often carries Hockey East games. Mostly the Boston teams (BC, BU,Northeastern etc), but Maine-Vermont was on last season. I imagine we'll get some coverage.

The goalie recruit says we are building a new rink .... really? When did that get announced?

Upgrading the rink to a facility that holds 4500 or 5000(I thought it was 5000 but I have seen 4500 tossed out there) minimum was a condition of acceptance into Hockey East. They have to have concrete plans by April 2016. Look for construction to start after basketball facility is finished and some found raising is done. Because of Title IX (facility will be equally shared by men's & women's teams) they only have to raise 1/2 the funds via donations just like they did for the basketball facility...the rest can be bonded. According to the Sports editor of the Daily Campus there is a possibility it may be put on X lot near the new student rec center.

All of the funding for the basketball practice facility is to come from donations.

Miles Gendron ‏@mgendron10 Mar 19
Proud to say that next year I will be playing my junior hockey for the Penticton Vees in the BCHL

Same league Jeff Wight, a UConn commit and probable NHL draft pick this year, plays in. The BCHL is a step below major junior hockey. The BCHL has sent more players to college than any other league in Canada.

Jeff Wight, C – Merritt Centennials (BCHL) A playmaking pivot who sees the ice well and excels at distribution, Wight is essentially a point-per-game player in the B.C. League this season. The UConn commit had the bronze-medal winning goal for Canada West at the World Jr. A Challenge and brings a nice 6-foot-2 frame to the table. Draft eligible in 2014

Ben Freeman: His lanky, 6’4, 180 frame will have pro scouts watching close, though it’s his skill on the puck and nose for the net that will take him well beyond the next level if and when the rest of his body comes through. Leading his NMH Hoggers in scoring this winter.

Proud to announce my commitment to play D1 hockey at the University of Connecticut. Thanks to everyone for the help and support. #Huskies

Tyson is the son of San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. Should arrive on campus either 2015 or 2016.

Will Moran ‏@goalmouthradio 34m
Tyson has 9 points (4g,5a) in 42 games this season with Waterloo. Forward lists at 5'10'' and 165.

From overtheboards.net:

Miles Gendron appears like he could be a home-run for Connecticut if he’s finding his way on defense this quickly.

He recently switched to defenseman. A 2015 commit and playing in the BCHL next year.

2015 recruits Miles Gendron and Jeff Wight rated the 74th and 189th best North American skaters for the upcoming NHL draft in June. Gendron could go as high as the third round.

One Boston-area player who is attracting notice in the scouting community is Rivers School defenseman Miles Gendron. The converted center turned heads at the Select 17 Festival this summer and again at the Beantown Summer Classic with his combination of size (6-2) superb skating/mobility, and strong two-way game. Although raw as can be in the defensive zone and lanky with a lot of filling out to do, his eventual ceiling given his natural offensive instincts and quickness is considerable. We're hearing that NHL scouts are quietly zeroing in on him.
Prep players are tougher to peg in the draft pecking order, but at Red Line, we're believers in players who can skate and possess natural hockey sense as Gendron does. He's one to watch and could set himself up for legitimate draft consideration if he's able to prove himself as an effective blue-liner at both ends of the ice

With him being projected as a third round pick im guessing he will be on the UConn roster for next season 2014-2015 ?

Both are projected to be at UConn for the 2015-16 season. Gendron is playing in the BCHL next season. Outside chance Wight comes this season.

Okays thanks for the updates. I was guessing if they were going to be NHL Draft pics and they were rated higher than Segalla in the final rankings that they would both be here for next year 2014-2015 season?
