After listening to so many "stars" brutally destroy our song, it was an unexpected delight to listen to Lady Gaga knock it out of the park. She was just fantastic. I still have the goose bumps. Gaga's beautiful rendition begins at 2:05.

If you are under the age of say 31, you probably don't remember Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XXV. If memory serves, that version was released as a single.

I haven't seen 31 in more than 31. And I remember her all too well. For many years, I lived a half-mile down the road from Whitney Houston (R.I.P.) in Far Hills. Though clearly a talented artist, she was not a nice person, so I confess it's always been impossible for me to enjoy her music.

oh wow. they're both amazing. different strokes....thanks so much for posting these. Not an easy song and I'm a cynic about patriotism, but I got goose bumps from both.

I hate, loath and despise all versions of the SSB that include tremolos, trills, glissandos, or ANY of that crapola. I consider them out of place, disrespectful and gauche. Most pop-type singers simply cannot resist hamming it up. Aarrgghhh!

What about the version Jimi Hendrix used to use to get the audience to stand up?

Was so close to posting this myself it's a laugher! After seeing this watching the game and along with the tribute she did for Bowie (Grammy's) last night she is at the top of my must see live list. What a talent!

It is no contest, Whitney Houston did the best job ever

I like Lady Gaga, she is very talented, and can sing. But, I agree with you. Whitney hit it out of the park. HER version is still the best I've ever heard. Whitney was a rare gem that had a beautiful voice, that left us much too soon.

RIP Whitey. We love and miss you. :(

Didn't know that being a nice person was a prerequisite for singing a killer version of the national anthem.

Lady Gaga once wore only a Jeter jersey and lingerie to a a Yankee game. She has a freckle on her left forearm.

Matter of taste, I guess. I think it sucked, big time. Prolly a minority view.

It was one of the most beautiful versions I've ever heard. It's timing, 10 days into the start of combat for Operation Desert Storm made it even more seismically powerful.

I prefer a live to recorded version.

Not judging, just asking, but...living in the greatest, though admittedly not perfect, nation in all the galaxy, why the cynicism of patriotism? Despite its flaws, having pride in America is not a bad thing.

Lady Gaga has a much better voice than I ever gave her credit.

The late great Marvin Gaye did performed two entirely different renditions that were artistically unique and hauntingly beautiful.
I was impressed with her tone as well (seeing the Super Bowl performance for the 1st time right here)... seems that we just think of her as some weird chick in weird clothing.

also funny to see Cam and Peyton's behavior while she performed... before the game and after also after the allegations about the Mannings smh

This really stunned me the first time I heard it, and I knew she has a good voice.

Tony Bennett has recognized Lady Gaga's talent for some time now. No doubt he has been the biggest reason she has become more mainstream now. It's the reason the rest of us are beginning to appreciate her voice.

It's obviously not.

Whether it's a good or bad thing, absolute objectivity is not in my DNA; I find it difficult to separate the person from the performance. That's just me.

I do understand that Ty Cobb and Pete Rose were among the greatest baseball players of all time, but to my mind their incredible performances were overshadowed by their inarguably repellent persona.
Alex Rodriguez, Albert Belle and Randy Johnson have won world championships and hall-of-fame level acclaim, but their mean and nasty character bespeaks a person I simply could never root for nor, right or wrong, acknowledge as great.

Maybe I should just go by the numbers and judge strictly by performance, but I can't. My military upbringing taught me that character counts bigtime and being nice to others matters. Old fashioned and out-dated thinking, I know.

Thanks for asking so respectfully. I'm cynical about patriotism, not America. I feel enormous gratitude for living here, but patriotic sentiment for any country is often manipulated by scandrels and leads to uncritical support and inhumane action. (Fascist and Communist countries all displayed great patriotism, and, frankly, the NFL's calculated embrace of flag and military is so vulgar and exploitative that I no longer follow the sport.) As you say, for all its flaws America is a pretty impressive place, but a lot of people use patriotism for their own ends (hence my cynicism). Thanks for asking.

You must be a Red Sox fan because personally I don't see the problem. "A freckle on her forearm"? Is that the best you can share?

Then, IMNSHO, you cannot objectively declare Gaga's version "THE BEST." If living 1/2 mile down the road from an abrasive character is a mark against someone, where does wearing no pants in public rank?

I have to be honest. If a person's character undermined their entertainment value, I'd be hard pressed to watch any type of sporting event (especially football and, by extension, the Super Bowl), root for any type of team, or watch any type of movie/TV show. In deference to Billy Joel (Is his character intact?), "...we all have a face that we hide away forever, and we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone."

FYI, Albert Belle has as many World Championships as I do and he's been elected to the BBHOF as many times as well.
