Why does Syracuse think they could be NY's college football team? Because they are in NY state? Do they realize that BC is closer to NYC than Syracuse? In fact, there are 6 BCS football schools closer to NYC than Syracuse: Rutgers, UConn, BC, Penn St., Temple, and Maryland!

Why is this important to realignment? NYC is a fragmented market with Big 1G, ACC, and Big East teams. The first to consolidate the market wins.

Notre Dame and Penn State are NYC's college team... unfortunately UConn, Rutgers, and 'Cuse get what's left.

Basketball however... I think UConn has a pretty solid hold on NYC... with 'Cuse a close second. I think going to the ACC will actually hurt them recruiting wise.

cuse's large alumni base in nyc is the basis for that argument. if you ever watch a yankees game look in the left field bleachers a billboard reads something like "Syracuse we are new yorks college team" keep saying it maybe it will come true

New York City, for the most, doesn't give a s*** about college football.

The average NYC sports fan would watch the New York Giants play lawn darts before they turned on a UConn/Syracuse/Rutgers football game.

i remember once hearing an interview with vin diesel on the radio where he boasted, "i am nyc". well, i would say syracuse is to nyc, what vin diesel is to nyc.

NYC college football:

Notre Dame
Penn State

Rutgers
Syracuse
UConn

Michigan
Miami

NYC college basketball:

Duke
Syracuse - UConn (these two always flip flop in NYC for #2 dependent upon who's doing better at that time)

North Carolina, St. John's
Notre Dame

The main reason why NYC doesn't seem to care about college football is that no college conference has ever had the majority of the teams its residents care about residing in the same conference. And that doesn't look like it's about to change any time soon.

Cheers,
Neil

This wasn't true in the 90s when Syracuse was good, when Syracuse's national games would get 3.o and slightly above ratings nationally and 5+ and 6+ in NYC. Nor was it true in 2006 for Rutgers games against Louisville and West Virginia when those games received national ratings of 5 or above and 8+ and 7+ ratings respectively in NYC.

But I acknowledge that those are lightning in a bottle scenarios (McNabb and Ray Rice). For NYC fans to care enough the teams NYC cares about the most need to play consistently well year in and year out and preferably four of them be in the same conference where they play each other as well.

Cheers,
Neil

According to who? This is outdated thinking. I guess the Brooklyn Dodgers are still NYC's team too.

By the fact that ND games sell out in NYC and have more of a city buzz than SU, Rutgers, or UConn games and that PSU games are invariably shown by ABC Saturday afternoon regional games over those featuring SU, Rutgers, and UConn.

There are polls that ask these questions every few years or so and there are nielsen data ratings that are available to the networks that give them an idea as to what games to broadcast to which areas on a regional basis.

Cheers,
Neil

Just because you say that is a fact does not mean it is a fact, its your opinion. Can you point out a recent ND game that had NYC "Buzzing"? I must have missed it.

Cheers.

Notre Dame’s blowout win over Army from Yankee Stadium drew a 2.2 final rating and 3.531 million viewers Saturday night, even in ratings and up 6% in viewership compared to the network’s eighth and final telecast last season (CT/ND: 2.2, 3.325 mil).

Compared to last year’s primetime Notre Dame game on NBC (WA ST/ND: 1.4, 2.339 mil), ratings and viewership increased by 57% and 51%, respectively.

And this was a match-up of between a 5-5 ND and 6-5 Army. Think a similar match-up between a 5-5 UConn and 6-5 SU would get a 2.2 national rating? Where do you think the boost in the ratings for this game came from?

Cheers,
Neil

The boost came from the novelty of seeing Yankee Stadium dressed up as a football field for the first time.

And because you state this as fact, makes it so? Sorry, couldn't resist the asinine comeback since you pulled the same on me.

Again, there are polls that are taken every few years or so that demonstrate ND's popularity amongst college football fans in NYC. It doesn't change whether the Irish are up or down. It doesn't please me either, being an Orange fan. It just is. Sorry you have trouble wrapping your head around it.

Cheers,
Neil

According to the Harris poll done last year, but...

...the poll itself was questionable. Not a telephone poll. Conducted by survey.

If you have any integrity whatsoever you will ban yourself for a week for actually typing Temple onto your list as a school that the New York market has any interest in whatsoever.

temple has a ton of alums who watch bball when they can. it will quickly translate over to fball. temple isn't uconn. they were around years ago and had a bit of a fanbase. they will come back to life quick playing uconn and ruty.

Temple is on board for the rebranding of "NBC Sports Channel - Philly" along with Nova basketball. Gotta squeeze something between Phillies games, Arena Football, poker and Israeli basketball (yes).

Temple as a NYC team? Yeah. It's silly season.
