Didn’t see it mentioned anywhere, but it was good to see him back and get a little run. He seemed to handle Nova’s solid on ball pressure pretty well. We are going to need him to relieve Diarra a bit moving forward.
I mentioned it in the post game thread but agree 100% with this since Mahaney is incapable running offense under pressure.

He was clearly bothered by the pressure. He was able to get off the one pass when Nova upped the pressure that led to a layup, though, which is a win. We couldn't really run offense when he was in. It was clear Neptune told his dudes that if anyone but Diarra was in they should pressure the crap out of them.

I mean, the difference was Mahaney turned it over in his 2 minutes against the pressure, Nowell had no turnovers and took advantage with a hockey assist.

He was clearly bothered, the offense took too long to start in his couple possessions.

But we need him to get the experience right now so he’s hopefully ready to give Diarra breathers in March. Had he never been injured I’m guessing he woulda seen time earlier, but we can’t keep him on the bench behind Mahaney anymore.

Diarra is injured and about to be playing hungry and dehydrated. I really hope Dan understands how crucial it is to get Nowell ready, cause I don’t like the odds that Diarra holds up under those conditions.
Diarra actually looked pretty good out there moving around. Contrary to what Dan said in the post game presser he said he felt the best he has in a long time.

Could not understand why Nowell was tasked with guarding Wooga Poplar instead of the larger, warmed up Solo Ball (pause).

Throwing Nowell in cold off the bench gave tired Wooga Poplar a clear advantage. Glad the guys handled business.

Yeah they soon switched him to Perkins and he did a lot better job on him.

Hass definitely looked better and I believe him when he says he felt great. And none of that means his knee won't hurt like hell the rest of the season or is touch and go game to game.

He looked better than Mahaney but that bar was in the basement of the XL Center. He did not look good at all though in his minutes. Got abused on defense, got abused on offense but luckily didn't turn it over, and forced up a terrible shot.

That said, I'm good with him getting a 3 minute test like that to see what he has. But if it looks like yesterday he's not getting more than that

Nowell was unspectacular but solid. Glad the Philly kid got some run vs Nova. Like it or not-Some combination of Mahaney and Nowell are going to have to spell Hass. Limited minutes due to knee condition plus religious observance fasting.

I think we have to remember the context of PG2. It’s Aidan Mahaney or Ahmad Nowell

Yes Nowell was bothered by the pressure, but he brought the ball up through it. Two of those times he had good release passes into hockey assists. One of those times he was fouled 3-5 times with no call and still made it work. Mahaney is equally bothered by pressure but turned it over once before the offense even started

In theory Mahaney has the offensive potential to deserve those minutes, but he’s scored 6 points in the last 5 games. If our criteria is to just get the ball into the offense, I’m good with shifting minutes to Ahmad until one of them proves they deserve otherwise

Nowell needs game time experience. The game will slow down for him as he gets acclimated to real games vs practice.

I would like to see him get some more minutes here and there for his development
Problem is we're not in the part of the season where we can afford to give him more minutes to develop. Reminds me a little of Rahsool Diggins, who looked awful when he got into games as a freshman and never seemed to be comfortable out there but blossomed into a decent guard at UMass although probably would never have played much here. Unless you are an exceptional talent like McNeeley or Castle, it's tough for kid to come into a program like ours and play substantial minutes. And point guard may be the most difficult position to learn unless your name is Stephon Castle, who also had help from Newton last year.

Diarra played like a warrior last night, but look at where he was as a player when he got here. He'll have to stay healthy for the rest of the season, we really don't have a backup this year.

He was dicey and had some problems with pressure. Needs the reps to handle game speed pressure, but looks like a better option than our non-option in Mahaney.
What is going on in Mahaneys head? He must have pulled a few Stuart Smalley’s before he decided to come across the country to play in the big bad BE, and that Hurley was gonna make him the next John Stockton.

Now he can’t hit the floor for 3 minutes without shatting his pants. He’s been an utter disaster. They need to take pieces of his brain matter into the lab this offseason to dissect to understand how to fully avoid this kind of calamity again. Poor kid probably can’t wait to hop a red eye back to the bay area with his tail between his legs.

I wonder where he ends up next. I just hope he recovers.

I mean if you’re hammering Nowell you’re not understanding the situation and the mishandling. Down 8 and reeling after not playing for a month, great time to ask the kid to come in huh? Didn’t like it and expected him to struggle since he hasn’t been used at all. Hope he gets more here and there without it being an absolutely awful situation.

He's strong and quick, also not tall and hasn't had much gametime. He struggled but they swarmed him and he didn't cough the ball up or make a terrible play (his shot wasn't great but, meh). I kinda expected Stewie to come in, especially since Nowell hasn't been suited up recently.

Mahaney would probably tell you he was supposed to be part of a 2pg system and help out. He was to be a shooter that would thrive in our amazing offense. However, we can’t get penetration and kickouts so the shots aren’t there. Basically, he’d say it isn’t quite how it looks. Things aren’t as planned in terms of getting him in position to succeed.

I won’t be surprised to see him light it up elsewhere or stay here alongside a revamped portal roster with a true pg and look much better. This is a tough team to thrive on. That’s why so many are begging for Tarris to see the ball more and open things up for the perimeter guys.

When he was trapped he got no help from his teammates, they just stood and watched and did not present themselves. Whoever is being guarded by the guy doubling needs to move to the open spot. It is really not complicated. When Nowell passed out of the double team we got an open layup. That is what happens when you are active.
