Agree with the comment about Muffet's Demeanor after the BC Loss.

Money quote

McGraw has reached what famed author Elizabeth Kubler-Ross wrote was the fifth and final stage of grieving a loss — acceptance — after having gone through denial, anger, bargaining and sadness (with the understanding the loss of a basketball game does not register an iota compared to the death of a loved one).

I was thinking of exactly the same analogy. This team is a goner for this season. McGraw has accepted it. Now it’s time for whoever predicted they would go 13-5 in conference to accept it.;)

My anti-jinx strategy has worked well so far and I ain't about to change it  I predict a 10-4 finish to the conference schedule for the Muffet

I noted in the game thread Thursday that Muffet had adopted a different, less caustic tone in her press conference. @Shades noted that one of her bosses may have had a word with her. Could that be what happened in those 20 minutes?

"Usually, head coach Muffet McGraw enters the media conference room a few minutes after such disappointment, and oftentimes this year in an extremely despondent state. This time, there was a much longer wait of about 20 minutes — and a much more calm, measured demeanor."

Good article. Didn't pull any punches.

Muffet's coaching skills are going to be tested not only for this season, but at least the next 2 seasons. She has been praised by many as an excellent coach. Can she rise to the challenge?

I genuinely feel bad for Marta Sniezek. She is a workhorse who gives it her all, and after three valiant but somewhat futile seasons as a starter at Stanford, has to miss a season due to injury, has no redshirt scholarship available, transfers to a team coming off back to back championship finals, and oversees a truly historic descent from divinity to mediocrity while her former team ascends (albeit briefly) to number 1 in the country for the first time in a decade. For someone who works that hard and never throws in the towel, she deserves more than that.

Muffet, on the other hand, is getting just desserts...

Of ND’s 14 remaining regular season games (all vs. ACC teams), only one - Pitt - has a lower Massey Rating. The only other ACC team with a lower Massey Rating - Clemson - already beat ND! Do that math and project ND’s season record.

Are you an ex Connecticut citizen or an ex member of the Doo Wop vocal group from Connecticut, The Nutmegs?

It increases her composure but severely diminishes the entertainment value

The delay between the end of the game and MM"s appearance in the presser was duly noted on McGraw's Bench. And the resulting performance was very much appreciated, as well. Many Irish fans were not appreciative -- in fact, concerned -- of some of the prior appearances, whereas this one was much more level-headed.

For instance, her talk about the kinds of rebounds that the Irish front line gave up against BC was spot on ("close to the basket, resulting in layups") and she actually was having a conversation with the beat reporters there, as opposed to using them as triggers. I checked the scoresheet and she responded correctly to the glaring issues of that particular game (turnovers, 2nd chance points).

(BTW, many think that MM was advised to take a look the stat sheet and take a breath before that 20-minute gap. Touchdown Jesus knows there were enough thoughts/correspondence suggesting just that in the last week or so...)

One of the posters on the Bench (btd?) has brought up the point that MM, herself, is in a position she's rarely been in: having to start from virtual scratch. On everything. Forget the exact location of the pass to the cutter, how about moving without the ball. On the zone, keep your hands up and come to the shooter. I think you heard the admission about going back to fundamentals. IMHO, that's game in, game out.

I was rewatching a rerun of "The Killing" the other day and heard a phrase that could be amended: "People like to remember the way she could've been, not the way she was."
MM, one is hoping, is finally seeing the way the Irish are this year and will move on accordingly.

p.s. This will apply, hopefully in an incremental degree, to next year's class at all, particularly with the announcement of Nat Marshall's knee surgery.

p.s..s. Well, off to play hoops myself, perhaps in an effort to lower the bp before the NC state game at 4 p.m. Gotta do what you have to in order to keep the faith. ;)

I grew up in Andover Connecticut, ~7 miles from Storrs. Went to Windham High School in Willimantic (”Go Whippets!); and attended “Nutmeg Boys State” on the UConn campus in the Summer of 1956. That tells you I am at the right age to be a Doo Wop fan (just entered my 9th decade on the planet). My two favorites are ”Still of the Night” and “Come Go With Me”.

I chose my Boneyard handle so I could use the icon photo and also because I like the background story about the origin of the name “Nutmeg State”.

That is really great. If I make it to my ninth decade (twelve more years), I'll get to see all the incoming recruits that commit to UConn, at least through 2024. Don't know how much interest I will have after that.

Thank you.

And I am confident we will all have maximum interest as long as Geno hangs on to the reins. And when(hopefully, in the far distant future!) he does give them up, we will watch with great interest how his successor carries on the UConn traditions and track record. I am confident there will be no Tennessee train wreck in Storrs!

Has anyone been able to check in on @Dillon77 after yesterday’s debacle? Or is he now on a marathon run of hoop games lasting until Tax season?

As much as we thought MM turned the corner after BC, yesterday’s presser was a step or two backwards.
I do wonder if she took some time before going in there and is asking her staff for their perspective as this can’t continue as it is or ND AD must intervene.

Has ND released any info on the injury to Peoples shoulder...Just one more thing tossed MM over the edge.

Ok, day two of the five on five tourney: 55 games and counting (actually five is my max, ever.). No meniscus left in my knees, but it beats the beating my eyes took between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Whew.

Is there a relapse factored into 12-step programs because that sure as heck occurred yesterday. Maybe this is rock bottom...please? Having said that, I shudder to think what will happen if Peoples' shoulder is a long-term injury.

Regarding ND's AD, Jack Swarbrick, I'd suggest he might want to take the private plane to the away game under the guise of seeing his predecessor and current Duke AD, Kevin White. My lord, that post-game presser could be one for the books between MM's recent run and Coach P. not recognizing anyone on ND's team. She could be speaking in uniform numbers the entire time.

To quote the patron saint of hoops s+i&storms. Michael Ray Richardson, "dis' ship was near sinkin'" yesterday. Katlyn Gilbert kept it afloat (barely). OK, game 56 upcoming. Head bang

Maybe it gives her time to take a deep breath and cool off.

Since when has Coach P ever recognized a player on another team by name? If she couldn't recall Stewie's name I'm guessing she can't identify anyone not wearing a Duke uniform.

Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune just weighed in with a column. Noie can generally be seen writing about the men's program and covered the tough year Mike Brey and the men had last year, so the perspective is interesting. (kudos to The Bench's RISteve for the initial posting.) Many issues have been addressed, including MM taking aim at herself in the latest press conference (the entirety of which has been posted, btw). Maybe the "step back and down" from the BC game presser has now hit the bottom and one can move forward.

Still, just not sure the resources in the gym are ready to power the trip, particularly if Peoples is out for awhile. Keeping working with the team, individually and collectively, and make note of the gains.

As most know,I (and many UConn fans) am not an MM supporter. I respect the heck out of what she has built and accomplished as our #1 arch rival. This article written by Tom Nole seems excessive and particularly pointed at one of their own. So let me recap my interpretation of this: MM has built an unbelievable program going to 24 consecutive NCAAT and while this is a trying year, I view it as a “blip” as she has more than earned that leeway. This author makes it sound like ND has already turned into Tennessee which it has not. She has earned the right to have 2/3 down seasons. She has a top 5 class coming in, but let’s be realistic, with the Brunelle and People’s class, this is still a young team and while next years class is top 5 (#3 actually) it does not have the elite talent that SC has as freshman this year and will not have the Senior leadership that SC has so next year will also have it’s growing pains. It’s really two years from now that we hope to see a top 25 and climbing program, so more slack must be given by “her family of supporters” as she has earned that from them. From us, yes we will revel in this “karma” but don’t think for an instant I think this is the beginning of the end of MM, far from it. That writers characteristic is wrong to put the program “as any other program” and he should be called out on it. Just my opinion.

A brutal editorial, or maybe I should say unflinching. Something rarely seen even in negative opinion pieces involving women's college ball. The end is probably correct:

“It can turn at any moment,” McGraw said. “It’s important for me to remain hopeful.”

Hope floated out into the evening ether Sunday. A top-five recruiting class comes aboard in June. This year’s freshmen will be sophomores. Right now, all of that feels a long way away."

Noie is surmising that remaking this particular squad into a winner isn't going to happen.

Most of us have come up against situations where, regardless of our past successes, we haven't been able to turn things around in time to matter much. If you've been lucky and good enough to have that moment later in your career, rather than earlier, it just makes letting go of your high expectations of yourself that much more difficult.

I've been where Coach McGraw is today, and it was every bit as gut-wrenching an experience as she's going through now. Thank God I didn't have a camera thrust in my face to record the agony for posterity...

This experience will make Muffet a stronger and better human being and coach once she completes the process of soul-searching, separating a failed season or so from being a failure. In the meantime, maybe the wolves among us that delight in seeing an aging competitor brought low can offer her some moral support.

Good luck, Coach...this will take three years to grow through, and it's going to be a tremendous process for you and the young ladies in your charge.
