I too often think about where I'd like to live when I retire. My latest thought is Lake Champlain. Either NY or Vermont. So maybe someday I'll be back on the east coast.
Don't consider just one place when you retire. Make a list and try them all. Start with cold weather places when you are younger and move south as you get older. We started on the outer Cape and when it got too cold and desolate in winter and too crowded with tourists in summer we moved to Florida, where we've now moved three times. My wife and I made a pact that if one of us wasn't happy where we were living we needed to tell the other. Turns out often neither of us were happy and wanted to move but didn't want to tell the other. Some other places we are considering include a lake house in Maine, Santa Fe, and a city with New York, Boston and Paris on the list. Covid has definitely had an impact, but we are 70 and want to experience different lifestyles before we are in our 80s. Thats my 2 cents. Oh one constant is always access to UConn bball
