Non-UConn CBB memories

Whole team was stupid good and they were even better the following year. Tark's autobiography is an incredibly interesting read including some "dirt" on JC and his recruiting practices. Irony much?

LJ was so much fun to watch. Would have loved to see him for a decade in the NBA with a good back.

Seen a lot of good ncaa tourney games in person but the best was RJ Hunters three to beat Baylor a few years ago.

A related memory, in 1998 Hartford hosted 1st round games. Princeton played UNLV. The Princeton male cheerleaders were trying to get a picture with the UNLV cheerleaders (all 9's and above, probably strippers getting their degrees at night) and the female Princeton cheerleaders tried to jump into the shot. The guys quickly shooed them away  :p

For sure... He was kind of Zion before Zion. But if you go on YouTube you can watch the entirety of those UNLV games vs Duke and the following year #1 UNLV vs. #2 Arkansas in Arkansas. Crazy, high level basketball. Loved that UNLV team. Freakin' Moses Scurry coming off the bench, elbows flying, and screaming? Awesome.

My first non-UConn college basketball memory for some reason is this banked buzzer beater 3 in the 2007 MAC championship game:

Was starting to get interested in the sport at large in middle school and was watching on ESPN2. Other big memories - Ali Faroukmanesh’s 3 to beat Kansas, #2 Duke getting upset

One game that I attended that is etched in my memory was Princeton's victory over defending national champs UCLA in Indy in 1996. I was there to watch UConn beat Colgate and then Eastern MIchigan.

Princeton ran their methodical offense with back cuts and defeated UCLA . Great victory for Pete Carril. Another memory of that game was the fact that the UCLA cheerleaders had at least 2 outfit changes during the game. Indy also featured Duke's loss to Eastern Michigan which made this site even more enjoyable.

Another upset that I attended was the Richmond Spiders beating Indiana and Bobby Knight in Hartford in 1988

I didn't know it at the time, but my knee doctor was on that team. Shortest guy on Princeton's roster. Didn't get into that game, but did get a minute of garbage time in their loss to Miss St. two days later. He loved Carril. Big fan of UConn women for their fundamentals.

Loved early UCLA teams. Goodrich and Hazzard, and no one over 6’5”.
Have better memories of 1971 UCLA v Villanova. Was in the Navy by then, but had a few friends at VU. Howard Porter carried them, MOP, but it was found he had an agent so their season was vacated. Another BS ncaa call.

I'm sure that wasn't much fun for your doctor. Mississippi State impressed me with their size with guys like Dampier, Jones and Bullard. I knew there was no way Princeton would beat them, and they didn't. They beat Ray and UConn a week later.

Also Chris Mullin and Walter Berry in their BE tournament run.
The mid/late 80s, even without UConn being "there" yet, was so freaking cool. I was only like 5 or 6 but I remember watching Chris Mullin, Walter Berry, Mark Jackson and Louie. and those ridiculous GTown teams, Pearl Washington and later DC at Cuse. Dudes like Michael Adams and Dana Barros and the 87 PC team. Nova's run and at eight years old watching "Jerome Lane sending it in."

I know a lot of people dislike "Requiem..." because it doesn't really focus on UConn much, but man, the Big East was so freaking cool at that point.

I was fortunate to be at the Big East Tournament in 1981 in Syracuse. For the first three years, the BET was not held at MSG. Somehow, we had seats on the second row of the Carrier Dome. UConn was bounced early to Nova but we saw some great games and players. Players like Sleepy Floyd, Steward Granger, Chris Mullin, Billy Goodwin and John Pinone. I was impressed by Syracuse's Super Sophs Eric Santifer, Leo Rautins and Tony Bruin who could sky with the best of them. This was when UConn was still bad and before I developed my hatred for Syracuse. Syracuse beat Villanova in triple OT in the championship. And since this was prior to the automatic qualifier, Syracuse did not make the tourney and played in the NIT much to the surprise of the Syracuse fans.

I absolutely loved DC and Sherman Douglas and Rony Seikaly as a kid. My real Syracuse dislike peaked while sitting in the stands of the 6th overtime game. But I'll always credit those late 80s cuse teams for getting me super into college ball. It's cathartic to be able to admit love for non UConn big east.
@boog204 Dana B and Adams were my boys!!!!

Yeah. His B-Ref says he was 5'10". I think that's 2" generous. And he goes maybe 150.

Another player I liked from Syracuse was Stevie Thompson who played with DC.

It was easier to root for BC back then since they had multiple players from CT. John Bagley from Bridgeport, Jay Murphy from Meriden and Michael Adams from Hartford.

But those days are long gone now.

Our entire basketball league from Torrington was bussed to New Britain for a CCSU game. I believe in '74-75. CCSU had a 7'2" guy who rarely played. I'm pretty sure his name was Lake. We chanted "we want Lake" the entire game. He got in with about a minute left. We went wild. A lot of fun for a bunch of seventh graders. First CCB I ever attended.

Randolph Childress 95 ACC tourney 107 pts in 3 games topped off with 37 in the final vs unc. The moment of that tourney the killer cross and come get me on Jeff McInnis

Scotty Thurman rainbow 3 on Antonio lang with the shot clock winding down in the 94 championship game. Essentially sealing the game and denying Duke a 3rd title in 4 years.

Speaking of denying Duke 93 ncaa tournament going for their 3peat meets a Cal team lead by some pg by the name of Jason Kidd in the second rd. Stopped dukes run of 3 straight final fours, back to back titles.

Seeing Celtics vs Pistons in 2nd game of a doubleheader at the old MSG where Heinsohn had probably his worst pro game, 0-14 from the floor and fouled out. The 4 team doubleheaders are long gone.

Hey Guys,

Here's Another fun 'not made up' hoops story from Demo Square.

Hoops was my complete passion growing up & my hometown NYC was its acknowledged Mecca during those early years after WWII. All the college best players came from the Big Apple. And basketball was just a side-show for tall kids back then, with few fans nationally & TV contracts, B&W, no money in it for coaches or pro's. It was like being part of a cult.

As a student, you could get into any game at MSG for $2.00. I never missed a single Friday night college double header there in the 50's into the 70's, no matter who was playing. And all the best teams in the USA did play there. It taught me the game & gave me a key goal for my life - a basketball scholarship to go through college. I usually sat with the NYU kids Real hero's emerged from those games like Oscar Robertson, & Bill Bradley who aced every class at Princeton & later became a Rhodes Scholar & starter on those last two championship Knick teams 53 years ago, Senator & Presidential candidate. And all the coaches who left their imprints on my developing game (like the young bully Bobby Knight on one on one D). The best years of my youth.

I think some of today's NIL players will look back & wish they'd built a more rounded life of education instead of concentrating solely on money & trying to land one of those rare 450 NBA jobs.

BTW, I did screw up the points total for Tim & my big night at that Auburn fresh game I apoke of before in the early-60's. He scored 49 & I scored 46. For a total of 95 points. No missed shots. We did beat them by a hundred. Sorry to offend you. Ha!

STORY - In the mid 60's - 80's, the ACC ruled & had the best coaches til the BE arrived. They had the best brawls too - especially UNC & Duke (Art Heyman was almost decapitated in '61). The only ACC team from outside of the Carolina's was Maryland. Their coach Left Drissell (a cool guy & huge man) was a real combative spirit. But so was legendary South Carolina coach Frank McGuire. Both teams were loaded with NYC players who went south. And they were all fighters just like their coaches.

South Carolina has some huge, violent players who were all great players, huge, & violent at their core. McGuire brought these tough guys up to Maryland for a tough, out of state test.

I drove down to MD to hang with friend Tom Riker (South Carolina's center). This was the roughest game I ever saw in college. Elbows, smashed noses, fans throwing chairs & yelling racial insults. Lefty running after McGuire. Blood on the floor. Refs could not control it & they got attacked by fans & players. Near the end of the game, the big brawl erupted. Everyone involved. Refs got stomped, fans all over the court. Players in the stands, Cops making arrests.

Finally, Two of Carolina's biggest guys got a hold of Lefty Drissell, & their most insanely violent 6'8" 240 lb. teammate, John Ribock, nailed Lefty about half a dozen times in the face, knocking him out. The refs were too afraid to throw Ribock or anyone else outta Cole Field House. They just called the game & the cops cleared the gym & campus.

That's the way some of thse ACC rivalries were back then. So much fun!!!!

They let us play & fight back them. And rarely threw anyone out. I hate the hyper control of today's game. Trash talking is non sportsmanship. Pushing off or hooking on every drive is not basketball. Refs ganging up on UConn most games should never be tolerated.

But a fun, old school dust-up with few repercussions in say 1964?? One of my favorite hoops memories.

I wonder where 80 year old grandpa John Ribock is today. Ha! < look it up Super John)
