There has to be a reason, usually monetary, for a conference to expand.

With the B1G almost certainly approaching contract negotiations, it should be known in the near future whether those negotiations make expansion desirable for the conference/media. The demand for quality sports TV viewing has been on an upswing. ESPN is chortling and selling ads, the BTN is making record money...I'd guess that the odds would be very good for B1G expansion.

I suspect that the Big 12 has not expanded solely for the reason that the media contractors would not guarantee that the current individual payouts would not suffer. Since the Big 12 does not have a conference network like the B1G, the dynamics of adding a program are different.

The ACC currently does not have a driver for expansion. With a ACCN at least two to three years out (if at all), no contract negotiations going on, the only thing that could drive expansion would be the five year "look in". If ESPN said it would make it worthwhile, the ACC could add a program, and wait for ND before adding another.

Do we know for sure that their is a 5 year look-in? Or is that just internet talk.

Pitt is actually a midwest team.
If the ACC added UConn ans Temple ,that gap would be closed . But that makes too much sense.

I don't think I conference adding temple ever makes sense. The only reason they draw flies to their games is because of the week old popcorn left over from the Eagles' games.

Just as a FYI, Temple is considering an on-campus football stadium. A key factors looks to be that their current lease at Lincoln Field is set to expire driving up the annual cost from $1 million per year to $2 million per year. The on-campus stadium concept for Temple would be about a 30 to 40K stadium costing well north of $100 million. A decision maybe made before this semester ends.

I found this write-up by the local Philly paper to be a good view of the finances behind it in light of other recent stadiums, such as: Akron (27K, $62 million), Colorado St (40K, $200 million), Houston (40K, $158 million), North Texas (31K, $78 million)), (Tulane (30K, $100 million).

From a straight money view point, it is not a good picture. The article also points out that UAB recently shot down the opportunity to build their own on-campus for $75 million in 2011 and their football program is also now history.

I don't get it. The AAC rights were sold to ESPN ... that deal expires in 4 years ... The ESPN deal with SNY is expiring in 1-2 years ... so ESPN is looking to sell the remaining 2-3 years of its Lady Huskies' rights? And Koonz is calling this "locking up a long-term deal"? Who has the right to make a long-term deal? Is the AAC carving out the Lady Huskies rights as a separate TV deal? If so, is the money going equally to every AAC team or will UConn get some consideration from it? Do journalists ask questions?

...so you are saying a UConn Husky Woman's basketball network is so incredibly unlikely as to be virtually impossible? It is still more likely than the ACCN.

I read that article yesterday and was going to question koonz about the fact that the SNY deal was reworked into the ESPN contract and its my understanding that we don't see that money.

Boston College cast the lone vote against paying full cost-of-attendance scholarships. BC also only vote against overall vision resolution.

Flugaur lists BC with 27 sports. However, I believe full cost of attendance scholarships will be granted in very few sports. The NCAA has "head count" sports: football, (m) basketball, (w) basketball, (w) gymnastics, (w) tennis, and (w) volleyball. The only type of scholarship given in these sports is a full scholarship, and therefore the full cost of attendance will apply. All other sports are equivalency sports. In equivalency sports, full scholarships are offered, but rarely. The vast majority of students playing the equivalency sports have partial scholarships, and therefore I don't think full cost of attendance will impact them.

I wonder if P5 schools in the B12/ACC will realize that without a dedicated conference network, they will need to find more lucrative homes (B1G/PAC/SEC). There are several schools in the B12/ACC that will have a hard time implementing these changes throughout their entire book of athletics. There will be a non-revenue sport cutting spree fairly soon. And I'm sure that there will be a few feelers thrown around to the heavyweight P3 conferences from a few ACC/B12 members to see if there is a way to preserve all of their sports.
 
Surprised that BC was the ACC that voted 'No' if true as they try to promote their image of being a big boy in college football, even though we all know it is BS.

I can see the SEC voting no as they have always played very lose with recruiting as they seem to treat recruits like indentured servants and not students.

The ACC will not support the XII's attempt to get a football championship with only 10 teams. Not granting the XII's wish significantly increases the ACC's chance for survival when the P5 becomes the P4 within in the next decade. B1G will not support it either as they are the conference most like to poach from both conferences.

The split of the P5 (full or partial) from the NCAA, which is football driven, is going to really hurt everyone's sports programs outside of basketball, hockey, soccer, and maybe lacrosse. How will Title IX come into play here?

Lastly, VT or VA, who cares who has interest in the B1G, as long as it pulls UConn into the B1G (preferable) or the ACC (opportunity to crush BC in 'Cuse in everything).

The intent is to allow leagues their preference in how to determine their conference champion. It would theoretically eliminate the need -- per NCAA rules -- to split into divisions with the division winners meeting in a conference championship game.
