No surprise: Providence looking for a new coach

I dunno that I'd wish the Providence gig on anyone... didn't anyone see what Jim J. has done at Dayton?

If I'm Providence I go after a young assistant coach that has recruiting responsibilities. IMHO I don't see Shea or Marissa being interested in the position. Not enough resources provided to the Womens' team by Providence. I wonder if Carla Berube would consider leaving Tufts to apply for the position. She is able to recruit in the Northeast and has accomplished a lot with minimal resources.
 
Mike D'Antoni's available. I actually think he would make an excellent college coach and possibly a fine woman's one at that. But we're not likely to see it.

Berube was already an assistant at Prov, under Jabir.
Part of the reason Jabir left was lack of support at Prov. Seems highly doubtful she'd want to go back to that.

And she doesn't do all that much recruiting at Tufts. A little. But it's a D-3, highly selective school.
 
Lot's to like about Providence College as an institution of higher ed., but $ for womens' athletics ain't part of it - and understandably.

That is unfortunate because Jabir gave them more than they deserved.
 
More commitment than the school demonstrated in return. Not everything is measured in gold and not all that glitters is gold.

It was clear that Jabir had the team playing with more commitment and skill than seen on recent teams.
 
Providence should give Maureen Magarity at New Hampshire a call and set up an interview.
 
I would go after the guy at Amherst....

FWIW, Amherst goes after a second consecutive DIII Nat'l Championship this weekend.

Any job is a good job if the right person is given the right support. Remember that Uconn was a terrible job BG (Before Geno). They are a Big East school, so that program can be rebuilt. They use to be good. Here is a name I think they should look at. Niele Ivey from Notre Dame. She is at a catholic school, she has the "street cred" because she was a great player, and I've heard she is a great recruiter. Reminds me a little of Jenn Rizzotti.

Ivey can do way better than Providence; she would never take that job.
 
The long term issue at Providence has been reported to be that quality of support.

How much better? Jen Rizzotti has a crappy job I guess being at lonely U of H. I hear (joking) that she hates being there because it's such a terrible job. What is a better job? She could get a crappy job like Louisville, or St John's or Baylor. Oh wait they were bad jobs until they got great coaches. They are in the Big East. A great coach can make a make a team great. Remember she has a rep as a great recruiter, and Providence is a very good school. It is the right coaches job to make it great, just ask Geno.

Jen's position at UH is a very unique position in that CT is a small state and Jen was one of the first stars of UConn. She therefore receives a level of support at Hartford that a different coach might well not receive. There is no manner of logic by which UH can be constructed as a prime opportunity. But it is a special fit for a special coach and former player in Husky manic CT.

No such connection exists for Ivey at Providence nor is there an equivalent Providence superstar on a NC team to return to the Friars.

As a Wildcat myself, I want her to stay there and turn them into a power.

very well stated. no school will change it's ways regarding support until someone comes in and creates a program worthy of that support. it's a bottom up process, and the schools that you mentioned are good examples. there are some very good mid-major coaches around who might want to take on the challenge. after all, the Big East is the best women's conference in the country. even in the lower divisions there are coaches like G.P. Gromacki at Amherst( already mentioned), who combines great coaching ability with great passion. he's the kind of person that a school like Providence needs. someone that they could really get excited about.

If the administration does not support your program you have little chance.

Louisville has been hugely supportive of its athletic programs; it was clear that it was a great opportunity. St John's sits in the middle of tremendous NYC talent.

Niele Ivey is an assistant at a tier 1 program. She can get almost any job she wants. The last ND assistant went to Penn St. The Providence job is nowhere even close to that.

Any of the future big east schools are better jobs than Prov as well. Most of those schools stink too, but they have more potential to improve.

You would think he would relish the opportunity to escape the Amherst Mascot : " “The Singing College” is represented by one Lord Jeff; a poncy, powdered wig wearing British general and politician who somehow manages to be even less intimidating on the field than Evergreen’s Geoduck. I wouldn't be surprised if Amherst pays better than Providence. And less work.

Unfortunately they ran into a George Fox (Oregon) team with a 6'5" center. In D3, the centers are usually 6'0", and they couldnt stop her - she scored 30+. Still it was tied with 3 min to go.
