For all Husky fans who have watched both MBB & WBB at UConn’s home away from home in Hartford, CT, be advised that the XL Center is no more. The ownership group of the arena has negotiated a 10-year agreement with Peoples Bank for naming rights. Effective immediately, the facility will be called PeoplesBank Arena.

No disrespect to Peoples Bank or XL, but I still refer to it as the Civic Center and everyone knows exactly which venue I’m referring to. Perhaps it’s an age thing (mine, not the venue).

I grew up in Glastonbury and for all my life in Connecticut, it was called the Civic Center. I totally get why the naming is important - advertising for the company who purchases the rights, and revenue for the venue. It's good to know the new name so I will know what venue it is when I hear it!

I tried to call the Civic Center the XL center whenever I mentioned it. I will try to call it People's Bank Arena now. But old habits do die hard!

I do have to say at least I know who People's Bank is! I never knew who XL was/is... Always made me think of a clothing size...

XL Center was easy to say, this not so much. It will also be the most misspelled Arena in the country. Three posts ahead of this one, already two spellings.

Wow, just announced an hour or so ago and PeoplesBank Arena already has a Wikipedia page.

I'm confused. Peoples was merged with and, I believe, into M&T Bank. Why isn't it the M&T Bank Arena?

PeoplesBank is a subsidiary of PeoplesBank Corp MHC headquartered in Holyoke, MA.
 
This may be a minority view, but that facility is dangerous for the more mature. The steps are incredibly steep and the hand rails are totally inadequate. This old guy would vote for having all the games at Gampel, but I would be totally outvoted.

I only had seats in the upper tier once and that was enough. If I can’t get seats in the lower tier, I watch the game on tv.

There are many name changes that I refuse to recognize and to this day refer to the following (I won't dignify the new names by mentioning them): the Pan Am Building, the Tappen Zee Bridge, the Triboro Bridge, Sixth Avenue.

Wait! They changed the name of the Tappen Zee Bridge??? I would make a comment about the "new" name of Sixth Avenue but I don't want my post to be deleted for being political.

Steep, yes, but great sight lines. My UConn hockey season tickets (11 years) are at the top of the face-off circle, inside the blue line (where UConn shoots twice). Row N, looking above the glass at the goal. If I get relocated to accommodate the suits, I’ll be one pissed off alumnus.

There's a nostalgia that's lost with these insane naming rights. Growing up, it was great going to see concerts, wrestling, and sporting events at the New Haven Coliseum and the Hartford Civic Center (specially if Van Halen was playing and we'd get the concert shirts with the tour dates on the back). Now it's just...meh, I'm going to insert city name.

LOL, the double letter rows, i.e. AA, BB, etc. are what convinced me that I needed to get season tickets and work my way into better seats. Starting in the mid-90's it was becoming very difficult to get decent single game seats. Also, you need to be a little bit of a mountain goat to get to those seats.

Played a lot of sports and playing football and basketball games in...Red Ball Jets, PF Flyers and chuck Taylors all with no real ankle support will do tht to you and just so you know those PF Flyers DON'T make you run faster and jump higher.....the commercial lied. Surprisingly my ankles are abt the only joints tht don't give me problems whn I jog now.
