In the past we had Sue Diana Renee and Maya. This year Geno looked to Caroline but with her injuries she couldnt. He looked to Kelly and now Tiffany. In all 3 losses this season we have lacked a floor leader. We score by committee. Caroline had a great game againest LVille. KML a few great games and Brias been holding it together for most of the season. But over the last few games we have seen what was apparent last night. Somebody needed to step up. As good as this team is and they are very good, very talented but lack experience because most of them are underclassman. WE need a floor leader. We need someone who can step up and score and do it consistently when we need it. In all three loses that is what we've lacked. A consistent scorer and leader. I see Bria becoming that person however she is still only a soph, and a great one at that.

We lost last night because of turnovers, and steals but most of all no Court Leader. Someone who can step up when the team needs it. Some one to take control when we start running out of control and shooting to quickly. You saw STJ slow it down a couple of times last night. UConn didnt. Im hoping last night woke up this team and collectively they realize what they need to do. We shouldve won this game going away. Weve struggled the past few games. This is just what we needed before the ND game and we have the Pitt game to work it out. The Pitt game will tell us alot . I expect to see a different UConn team from here on out.

Double Ditto Tony C, I said this too many times this season that this team plays sloppy defense and gets beat off the dribble then commits silly fouls. Stef is 2 steps slower and needs to pick up her game or ride the pine. I feel good about Kiah........How many times does ND and now SJ beat every UCONN player on dribble drive and kick out before they are coached to defend it 1 on 1......SJ did a clinic on UCONN and scored 32 points off bad defense or out of position players.

Actually, I am not sure that the continual dribble drive defense was not designed. It appeared that the scout was to force baseline and then trap with the post. We continually defended the high side hand and gave up baseline. This sometimes is a good defense. However, the other spots have to move and take away the passing lanes. Instead, the elbow was left unattended many times as were a couple of other spots in different positions. STJ did a great job of finding that open player. I agree that we many times did not have anyone on the floor that really appeared to be in control. I don't think they appeared scared or worried either. Unfortunately, it looked like there was a lot of indecision on shot selection. This also affected the rebounding as we had two players going after an ineffective trap right when the shot is going up. I'm not sure, but those 18 or so turnovers didn't help their cause. Some of them were downright awful.

Right on, I expected Bria to do it last night as she has in other tough games, but it was not to be.

I would like to see KML get the screens that Maya and Diana got. I would also like to see Stef stop committing silly fouls. Stef has got to understand that she needs to stay our of foul trouble. At 6'5 she is doubled and Kelly is not. Give Kiah more minutes with Stef and KML screens and UConn will score better.

Kiah is right. I think she is the only player who has shown improvement lately.

I don't buy any of the scapegoating I am reading today on this board. Until about 8:53 p.m. last night, UConn was considered the very best defensive team in the country (not only statistically, but Geno said so!) and among the best offensively. We annihilated several good ranked teams (did everybody forget Georgetown? Duke? Oklahoma?) and beat everybody but #1 Baylor (lost by 5 at their place) and then #2 Notre Dame (OT loss in their gym). So we have a bad night and overnight we have been transformed from the Harlem Globetrotters to the Washington Generals.

I don't believe it. I do believe that Geno and his associates can out-coach us Boneyarders and that they will take this team as far as their collective skills (and a little bit of luck) permit.

For sure we had a bad night last night. It happens. Might happen again. But I think that somehow we'll manage to outscore Pitt on Tuesday, then go forward from there to start some new streak.

He he. Love it. We'll have to spice up the next game with the confetti in the bucket trick. :)

SO -- if we are the Harlem Globetrotters, who do you think is going to drop-kick the ball from center-court through the hoop -- nothing but net?

I don't remember the kicker's name who did that amazing feat -- but I saw The Globetrotters (live) in 1948 when I was 14 years old. The drop-kicker made the shot on his first try! I was really impressed and remember it like it was yesterday.

I nominate Caroline to be our kicker. She has played a lot of football with her brothers. And she was a right foot dominant soccer star. That's her good knee. And ---- she is pretty good at trick shots.

Let's see. The guy who tossed in rainbows from 50+ feet was Curly Neal. The wizard dribbler was Marquis Haynes. The original clown center was Goose Tatum, succeeded by Meadowlark Lemon. Who did I forget? Ah, yes, the kicker. George Blanda? Lou Groza? Pat Summeral?

Back to you, coach.

As usual, most replies are spot-on.

But I continue to believe that the single most important factor in the STJ's game was tiredness.

For example, where was our vaunted press?

Non-existent. Why?

Individually and as a team, we were too tired to employ it effectively.

Peace,

John Fryer

John, I've been saying that too. On another mostly unnoticed thread I noted that we played essentially 6 with Caroline's injury; not enough bodies in play. Remember it was only a few games ago that Geno and the Yard were commenting on how good we were defensively.
