William Shea has become an overnight Boneyard icon. He is to be revered, not scorned. His disparagement of the Huskies in their time of need, his reveling in how his bracket would remain perfect with a Husky loss, is the stuff of legend. Now that all the sports commentators remark on how it has been team defense, especially Ryan Boatright's defense, that has allowed the Huskies to advance past Michigan State and FL, William Shea's observations about our D have become especially precious.
In his honer, I propose we memorialize his name the way we did with Wes Watts on the football board. Let's call the basketball board the "William Shea Memorial Lounge." Our slogan will forever be, when we happen upon each other at a bar, or in line at the bank, or passing on the street, with a knowing nod and wink: "Heartless and Gutless." Our shibboleth. Our secret phrase. Only we will know its meaning.
At the next Boneyard golf tournament, win or lose on Monday we should have one, we will get new Boneyard hats. My old one is worn and tattered. Time for another. Inscribed on the in seam will be: "No D, Heartless and Gutless."
