Herbie needs to STFU unless he is going to talk about a 5-loss Wisconsin team. They finished 12-1 in the 5th (4th?) best conference.

Yeah he does. Needs to be stopped by State Police when he shows up for Walter Camp Foundation. Wasn't all that good as a QB if I remember. You'd expect a program like tOSU to have a better QB.

The problem with TDH joking about having the state police arrest someone for expressing an opinion, of course, is none of us are really sure that TDH is joking.

Gonna have to catch him on way from Bradley to Bristol. I don't remember Herbie ever being @ Walter Camp Foundation events

I'm not upset at NIU. They got lucky and got the spot. I think people are upset with Herbstreit because he's right.

NIU lost to Iowa and only beat Kansas by 7. Based on that they are better than UCLA ? Better than Michigan? Better than Louisville even? I don't think they're even better than Cincy. But because they are ranked that one spot higher than UCLA they are

It's not their fault and hopefully this will help lead to a larger playoff pool, but if you are convinced they deserve to be there (not because of some unique rule based on rankings) but because they're better than Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, LSU, or Clemson etc. then you're full of it.

NIU is giving all students free tickets to the orange bowl. An aggressive way to get the people out there.

http://espn.go.com/chicago/college-...is-offering-students-free-orange-bowl-tickets

Did we do something similar for our students in the Fiesta Bowl? I was really disappointed in how Hathaway did not market aggressively to students and alum.

If the students are smart they'd put those on ebay and sell them for weekend beer money. There are no students from the Chicago area who will say, "Gee, I'd travel to Miami and spend a few days in South Beach.....but that $75 game ticket is a just a financial deal breaker."

I also see the MAC stepped up and will likely subsidize NIU's trip. Good for them.

I don't get how people are mad about their inclusion. If the likes of Herbstreit are so up in arms about this he should track down the coaches and media who bumped NIU up in the rankings after their win. They were not in the BCS top 16 before the win and needed help in the human polls to get there. They got that help and wound up 16 or better in both the USA today and ESPN poll. So in a sense they were VOTED in after their win and those who increased their rank knew it might cost OK a BCS spot. This was not an automatic berth, they still had a good shot at not making the top 16 in BCS after their win.

Wonder if the media's "NIU making a BCS bowl" outrage will trump their "UConn making a BCS bowl" outrage. I would hope so.

Any day that the smug CFB talking heads at ESPN are ticked off about BCS injustice to their precious power conferences is a good day.

Hopefully Wisconsin trumps both Husky schools. Lost in all this is how dreadful the B1G was this year. I can't wait for their New Year's Day bloodbath.

All the conference commissioners and presidents agreed to this top 16 stipulation...if they didn't want this scenario coming to pass it should have never been agreed upon. Good for NIU for taking advantage.

Well I think it's a farce not because NIU can't make a game of it, they might. The problem extends to the entire BCS Bowl matchup system. There should be an 8 team playoff with the ranked teams playing at home for the first round. That's 7 major games and you can call them BCS or whatever. Still plenty of room for other bowls on the calendar and we get solid competitive games at interesting locations. Thery still keep avoiding it and messing with things until they kill the whole system. These are the smart guys?

Yup. Play the first round early enough and the four early outs can still go bowling.

They just dropped 70 on Nebraska. You think they are going to look worse than we did against OK? They were also shuffling QBs half the year due to injury and the magical stud O'Brien choked a game away by himself. They are 8-5 like we are 5-7. We both should have 2-3 more wins.

Exactly. Don't see NIU beating FSU, but I think they could take Wisconsin.

I love this. 3 absolute farces. The BCS and Fiesta only 2 compelling games. I hope Ville gets rolled by the Gators too.

I dunno. I'm pretty interested in A&M/Oklahoma and LSU/Clemson.

Who's joking. And they wouldn't be stopping him for expressing an opinion but rather . . . . I'm sure they could find something that would work though. The man harms UConn everytime he references them (likewise for the Big East). Needs to do local color for Ohio State. His knowledge of the college football landscape (after all the time and opportunity he has to learn something about the game) is pathetically limited.

I was thinking if you do 1-8 / 2-7 / 3-6 / 4-5 you could have an upset team assume the higher seed and get the next round at home. If 8 beats 1 or 7 beats 2 they play the semi at home as the 1 and 2 seeds respectively. And first round losers could be eligible for a bowl but doubt they'd want to.

The Road to South Beach! RT @HodgeChris5: 500 NIU student bus slots sold out in 9 minutes. Working on more.

For some reason organizing something like this for the Fiesta Bowl or the Final Four in Houston was beneath Hathaway.

I'm not inclined to support how Hathaway ran the AD but Dekalb to Miami is 21 hours. Storrs to Glendale is 17 hours longer than that. That's a huge distance from a time and cost perspective.

I'm pretty sure that Hathaway, and the majority of his staff, had no idea what was going to happen with tickets in 2010, and only got a hint of it, after myself and a handful of others, started trying to get ticket sales motivated on the old Boneyard website starting about an hour after Teggart nailed the kick against USF.

I am completely serious when I say that had the Boneyard few not begun to advocate for ticket sales to the Fiesta the moment that kick happened, we sell 50% of what we managed to sell through the school.

I talked with a representative at UConn in December 2010 about chartering flights for UConn students/alumni - anybody that was going out for the game. I hit a brick wall.

I'm more than confident, in saying that the next time we make a major bowl game, the athletic department is going to handle things differently and much better, than they did in 2010.

Apart from a payout or an angry fan base I have no idea why anyone would be upset with NIU going to a BCS bowl. If its not the national title game then it has zero impact on who is crowned national champion. Being a "BCS bowl" only means that it is one of several sites that gets to host the national title game on a rotational basis. Other than that, it means nothing. It's another bowl.
I would think that a compelling matchup is what people would want. What if NIU makes a game of it? Is it such a stretch? Getting two "big name" programs from the power 5 or whatever they're calling the conference cartel these days does not guarantee you're going to get any more of s competitive game. Just look back to last year and WVU dropping 70 on Clemson.

I'm all for NIU being in this game. Herbstreit can stick it.

If they don't fall asleep FSU should win by 17. If they do for a quarter or more they could lose. Bowl games are funny because they take place long after the season is over. It's a huge break if you're not motivated. And having extra time to study a more talented team is and advantage when you're the underdog.
