Nils Machowski Committed!

If y say so. I feel like AM 2.0 is coming against good teams. I guess we’ll see in Vegas.
He very well could end up being AM 2.0 for us. A huge difference however is that his role can be reduced quite a bit easier than when we had AM. We needed AM to be our primary PG (with Hassan getting a decent amount of playing time and Nowell developing). AM couldn't handle that role and Nowell was injured early, then not up to the task later on. Diarra played too many minutes on a damaged knee and broke down late in the season.

We have alternatives this year.

I like this addition. I have confidence he can have an offensive impact because he appears aggressive seeking his shots, and he gives us at least combo guard ball handling against late game presses if we are protecting a lead. As a team, we need help behind Silas and hearing him emphasize his point guard experience and reference to his euro point experience gives me a bit more hope., BUT, I'm concerned about games where Silas has 2 early fouls and we have to play extended minutes with County or Machowski and no Silas offensively or defensively. If the staff already feels 'all set' at point guard I'm a bit surprised. I think we need a defensive point guard 'dog'.

If Demary has to sit with foul trouble Ross can always switch onto his man, County/Machowski shift to the lowest threat perimeter player.

Maybe Jacob Ross steps up as a situational defensive stopper. He’s got good size and athleticism at 6’5.

Mullins could handle lead guard duties in a pinch where we need a tall defensive oriented lineup. Mullins, Landrew, Ross backcourt. Don’t really see that happening, but my point is this roster is versatile and guys are coming into the season with points to prove ie Mullins handling the ball more.

Mullins will be able to do it if needed. He already spoke about his preparation for next season and he mentioned that specifically, ball handling. He knows it was a weakness and I look forward to seeing how good his handle gets.

Agree with all except Ross being better next year than Mullins was last year. I guess he will be significantly on defense. Hopefully our bench is better at every position except junior over smith. I’d say:

Starters
Silas (Senior) > Silas (Junior)
Braylon (Soph) > Solo (Junior)
Jayden (Senior) = Braylon (Frosh)
Nik (Soph) < Alex (Senior)
Najai (Soph) < Tarris (Senior)

Bench
Junior (Frosh) < Malachi (Senior)
Nils (Senior) > Ross (Junior)
Colben (Frosh) > Stew (Junior)
Backup PF ? Dwayne (Senior)
Oskar (Soph) > Reibe (Frosh)
I'm good with calling Jayden/Braylon a wash trading some offense for some defense but that assumes Ross continues to improve. His improvement has been slow and steady so not sure we should expect a huge jump. Mullins played a lot of minutes last year (he would have played more if not for foul trouble) and I wonder if Ross will be able to match his minutes. Not sure how much Landrew will poach his minutes. If Landrew is our starting 3 by conference play as some think, then I guess that is a good sign because I don't expect Ross to regress, so that would mean Landrew is pretty good.

It is hard to pick a Freshman over Malachi but I was not impressed with Malachi so I tend to see him as a low bar. That being said Malachi stepped up big for us in the end when we needed him most. Not sure we could expect he same from County. But as long as Silas stays healthy that should not be an issue. Health is always the unknown variable.

As bad as the Cam comparisons are, this one is worse. Mahaney was brought in to be a 30 min/game primary ball handler. Missing on that is a big deal. Missing on a guy whose role is to play 10-15 at two different positions and make open shots is far less impactful.

You do remember AM was barely playing even with Hass on 1 leg? He couldn’t even get 15 min at times. I’m afraid he’ll be overmatched at this level, like Am

A Wofford fan on Reddit posted this about him when a UConn fan asked what to expect:

"He's a literal flamethrower. There were often games where he was our entire offense. Extremely smart offensive player. Can make extremely long distance shots even when he is the focal point for the defense."

Seems like a great option for what we need him to do here. The more I sit with it the more I like this pick up.

AM was trying to be a starting point guard and run our offense. Nils will have a less vital role as a scorer off the bench - maybe a 5-10 minute guy on a night he’s not effective, and maybe a 25 minute guy on a day he’s got something going. Possibly more if Silas, Braylon or Jayden are out.

JoeyC is thought of as a unique one dimensional gunslinger - so I don’t like to use him as a comparison, but we can maybe think of him a JoeyC/Alleyne hybrid sort of player.

Nobody had Dylan Darling as a key part of the SJU portal class, but he won some games for them. Including a big role in beating us. You need bench pieces.

I think you reinforced @Excalibur's point more than your own. Either way, we'll see, and this is hardly the place to spend energy in April after the recruitment has wrapped up.

Difference is Nils was averaging 24mpg against B12, BE, and B10 teams to end the year at UCF shooting 43/39/90 and giving you 7 and 4 boards. He’s already shown he won’t be totally overmatched.
