Nils Machowski Committed!

Don't really like any player comparisons and think it's setting Nils up for failure to compare him to Cam, but it is worth noting he played in the Big 12 the 2 years prior to his junior year. Albeit it with subpar res

Just once I'd like to talk about a kid without immediately comparing him to someone else.
100%

Nils reminds me of Nik. They both have 3 letter names beginning with Ni, have a silent letter and can shoot the 3.
Except the 4th letter in Nils is pronounced. Ideally, “s” symbolizes silencing opponents’ fans, particularly trashy Queens jackarses.

Obviously, he's not close to Cam, but I have higher expectations than being Joey California 2.0, considering he only averaged 5.6 PPG here. Nils is 20 lbs bigger and appears to have more of an all-around game.
I agree 100% - his first two years at UCF he didn't seem to play much and his real playing time came when he transferred to Wofford. Now that he is back playing at higher level of competition and a few years older I'm hoping that translates into productive minutes with the Huskies. If coach Hurley believes he can contribute at the highest level then who am I to question. Welcome to big time basketball Nil's and the best of luck in the upcoming season.

He looks to be much more than a 3pt shooter - a good passer and a good defender. He had 8 assists in the U18 Euro championships. What I'm most impressed with in the videos, is that he looks to be a very good high pick and roll ball handler with the ability to cut hard to the basket when the opportunity presents himself. This fits in with most of our sets where we utilize the high pick and roll screen actions to start our sets.

He doesn't seem to have the savy that Cam has (not sure why people are comparing him with Cam) but he looks play more downhill than Cam did.

You’ve probably watched more game film than me of Nils, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in the metrics.

Nils played on a HORRIBLE defensive team (KP 311ish), so his defense metrics are gonna get dragged down by his team (and yes I know the nerds “adjust” for this, but I’m not at all convinced the adjustments really wash out the full effect).

He actually had postive D metrics when he was on UCF.

I will almost guarantee he’ll be at least serviceable on D at UConn and his metrics for D will ne the best of his career.

metrics.

The middle one is defensive. Nils was the 11th best player in the SoCon while Ball the 19th in the Big East but had better offensive, defensive and overall metrics than Machowski.

Watching some of his film and his defensive metrics (DBPR, DRtg, DBPM) are all significantly worse than Solo. Wofford was statistically better defensively with Nils off the court lol

Edit: I should clarify that Wofford was an atrocious defensive team and Nils was literally playing PF for them at times. They had absolutely zero size. But Nils is way way way more comparable to Solo/Joey California's defensive abilities than a guy like Spencer (who wasn't an elite 1 on 1 defender, but a really good team defender). We brought this guy in for his shooting, rebounding, and extra ball handling. Not for another defensive guard.

Yeah, but Joey California was a dreadful defender too and even fell out of the rotation entirely in January, until he became serviceable by March. Having 2 elite rim protectors is key. Plus Nils is a great rebounder. Having guards who can rebound so the bigs can get up the floor in transition is something that we were lacking the last 2 years.
That was so underrated about Cam and Tristan was how well they rebounded for their position. Agree having a guard not afraid to mix it up and clean glass is a luxury.

I’m really excited about this pickup. He looks to be the exact type who can provide a spark of offense off the bench that we need, and he’s a solid rebounder to boot. Something tells me he’s going to have some big games for us

Can confirm, watched their whole game against Auburn from this season and Wofford’s D was a dumpster fire. No communication, guys running into each other on screens, completely losing guys left and right. It was awful. I’m sure Hurley will get a lot more out of him.

Cam had 25 points in his third game at UConn. His first games against high major competition at UConn he had 18/5/2 against Indiana, 16/5/5 against Texas, he could barely walk at Kansas and had a bad game and then followed it up with 23/7/6 against North Carolina.
Maybe he was talking defensively, he wasn't great for the first half of the year, but much like new faces to the program, he held his own in the second half.

Nils has that Microwave vibe off of the bench. Imagine the open looks he's gonna get out of our sets.
Assuming he moves well without the ball and can square and shoot pretty quick off screens. His release is quick, and he is obviously a good spot up shooter, but it was hard to tell from his highlights how he works off screens.

Comparisons to former players is a silly way to look at things. Especially when we know very little about the incoming players.

An additional item, this on many responses to the Nils/Cam comparison, if we were to be fair, Cam's season at Rutgers would be the equivalent of Nils' upcoming season here.

If anyone wants to compare Nils to Cam go ahead, but compare the Wofford stats to the Loyola MD stats.

I think he's gonna like the screens/picks he'll be getting from Hines/Oskar in our motion offense to create enough space for his shot. He's not as quick as Braylon Mullins on his release. But he's got a quick shot and doesn't need much room from what tape I've seen.

Welcome Nils, cool it a bit on the comparisons all you gotta do is be the best version of yourself that you can be, be you.

I think the past few seasons have really cemented for me just how much being a culture fit matters. We don't have the incredible runs we did if Tristen, Cam, Silas, Hassan or even Joey off the bench weren't great culture fits. We need a baseline of skill but a more talented player that might fit the prototype of a bench guard but just has a good culture fit instead of great wouldn't make the team better.

The only thing this young man needs to do is to learn Hurley - ball, work his butt off and be the best version of himself.

His last name is basically the same as mine. Same (original) pronunciation at least. Guess more money going to NIL merch. Welcome to Storrs, nephew

People on here are really underestimating this team’s firepower. We have an all Big East PG returning, a potential AA shooting guard, 1 former 5 star recruit and another borderline 5 star frosh. Our starting center went into Gampel in March and bullied us around a bit. We still have our 6 man spark in Jayden Ross. Junior County has some flash and seems poised to give us a spark. Machowski looks smooth and ready to give us 6-8 ppg off the bench. This team has a lot and I’m excited to see it all come together.

Cam Spencer isn't a name that you just toss around. Put some respect on that.
One doesn't just walk into Mordor... unless you're Cam Spencer. Cam Spencer, the UConn Chuck Norris.
