NIL is already a billion dollar industry. A lot of the money is coming from "donor collectives".

It sounds bad pretty bad for recruitment especially. But the pre-NIL era was pretty bad in its own way, and legally indefensible. Athletes always possessed an asset and were prevented from “converting” it while in school. By itself, that doesn’t sound so terrible. But all the while the schools and the NCAA were busy converting those assets. It was the core of their business model. Yeah, we can focus on sleazy agents and boosters supposedly corrupting innocent athletes. But the legal position of the institutions was much sleazier.
