NIL Economics For UConn

At that number, you really need a HUGE jump from him next year. Hopefully, that happens, but it's far from a certainty. He definitely showed some great flashes of skill last year, but reality is, he's not exceptional athletically and he really struggled defensively due to a lack of physicality. He also struggled shooting the ball! Putting aside 'THE SHOT,' his year last year was fine for a freshman, but objectively, it was sub par for what we needed as a UConn starter. Many other players put in that spot could have produced his offensive numbers and given us way more defensively this last year.

I definitely want him back too, but next year, he still won't be exceptional athletically. He'll presumably mature a bit physically, but he won't be elite there either. So at that number, in our budget, given his limitations physically/defensively, he really needs to be a TOP LEVEL scorer...not just a streaky shooter. In that regard, you really can't just overtly dismiss other options for those dollars without serious consideration to those other options. Sometimes, getting 2 starter level seniors can trump a POTENTIAL sophomore star... especially one whose value relies so much on perimeter scoring
This is fair assessment, you are right he would need a huge improvement to justify that…I would add that if Mullins goes it opens up opportunities for J Ross and Furphy whom many NBA experts like Sam Vecenie are really high on and has clearly benefited from his year at UConn from a fitness standpoint which was only knock on him coming out of Australia…also we have Landrew and County coming in and people really high on Landrew as a physical 3 and scorer who can defend bigger players which Mullins can’t…if Mullins goes then you also have $$ to spend on quality bigs

With all due respect you have 6.5 ppg guys seeking 1.5-2 million. I’ll take a proven Mullins over two of those.
The top wings in the portal are projected to secure 2.5 to 3 million so if you're thinking of allocating 4 million to one who is not elite physically or athletically, he better make the jump to ELITE scorer

Have you seen some of the numbers being thrown around? (And maybe they’re fabricated to drive up price)
I don't believe any $ figure to be concrete at this point.

My main point is whether we can build a better team a la Dusty May without Mullins than with given whatever the NIL number ends up being. If we commit $4 mill to Braylon, is there enough to support him w/o having to rely only on the recruits. We already know we need to get more physical. I'm OK with either solution, I just want back in the FF.

I don't sub to Storrs Central for the inside stuff, so I suppose I should use some of my tax refund windfall for that ;-)

I don't know the inner workings of all this stuff, nobody here or in the media does UConn has a tight circle. I do know that it won't be UConn handing him a $4-5 million check, his package will involve a lot of national and local endorsements as one of if not the face of college basketball next season. We shouldn't have trouble affording really good players in the portal/rest of the roster.

Image is a literal photo or video, likeness is any representation of that athlete including drawings, cartoons, number signifiers, etc.

I'm guessing they just needed a vowel in there so they can turn it into an acronym of sorts.

The rumor is Hines is asking for 5. Even if he gets 3.5, how can we sign Braylon and Hines, bring in a few others in and retain our upperclassmen. The math ain’t mathing!

I'd like to see Donnie Freeman slide in at the 4, but he will probably end up in Queens or in the SEC. I think he's got the toughness we will need.

I know NIL is very tricky but I don't wanna hear that we're on a budget. You can't charge the prices you charge at games and be on a budget. If you wanna be in a power conference you can't be on a budget.
Every business is on some kind of budget. Unless they have a tree that money grows on. Budget doesn't mean being cheap. Even Kentucky had a budget last year. You can't spend money you don't have.

It was just rumored that UConn is considering paying Mullins 4-5 million a year, have no idea if there’s any truth to it. But let’s say it had any validity, what does the NIL budget look like, who is getting what, and how does the NIL budget look for next season vs last?plus we need to pay 2 new centers?

Personally I think Braylon's marketing value is in college next year....he would be one of the main faces (if not the face) of CBB next season. There are no Cooper Flag's or Cam Boozer's next year, so Braylon would be in the State Farm commercials. The only name that people will remember from the Tourney this year is Braylon Mullins.

In the NBA he's just another guy next year trying to get playing time, but in college he could make a boatload in marketing $ for a year and then go to the NBA in 2027.

I would think of Mullins almost "outside" of UConn's NIL budget next year if he came back, I think his Reps would make him a fortune, but mainly as the face of college BB.

The clock is ticking as UConn may soon not have the $ needed to assemble the type of roster via the portal to compete for a title every year like we’ve been recently accustomed to. Wealthy schools will large media rights $ or wealthy donors will outbid us or may even start poaching our own guys. It’s not just buying 2 bigs and a PF to come here, we also have to pay up for current guys to stay who could command a lot in the portal. Yes, we have the name brand, the best Hc in the country, the history, etc, but most guys aren’t going to the NBA and will hop into the portal to maximize their 4 or 5 year window to make $. That’s just the reality of it now unless laws or collective bargaining are brought into play.

1. Our budget is bigger than you all think

2. All the money won’t come directly from the budget. But other deals

Curious what the rev share allocation is between sports. I assume something like:
  • 50% Men’s basketball
  • 40% Football
  • 10% Women’s basketball
  • 0% All others

Or does Football get more overall than men’s bball just due to 5x players on roster.

Donors are going to start demanding multi-year contracts or court production sooner or later. I'd be pretty friggen' annoyed if I ponied up 100,000$ or more and the kid wasn't good enough to see the floor.

The rumored going number for 5’s is 4-6mil

We keep hearing about NIL fatigue but it’s yet to happen. Not long ago a 2 million dollar deal was unheard of.

April 1st was April Fool's Day. You joined 3 days late.

If men’s basketball is not getting at least 60% to 70% share then if I am Dan Hurley I am immediately camping out in the ADs office.

Can anyone explain to me what the difference between image and likeness is?
Image is a visual representation of someone. Likeness is how much people actually like that representation.

I'm not sure I believe all that. Wish someone like Tom Moore would have a frank discussion and let us all know what's really going on.

They all talk nonsense. They don't know the #'s, UConn has a tight group and if you aren't in you don't know. I'm sure that's how it is most places. We can speculate about Braylon because of Hurley's words and because of the endorsements coming his way.

That makes too much sense to actually be true.

I don't think you posted this in enough threads.

I LOVE a player calling them out like this. It's just agents making up BS, probably not even about their own players.

I barely know a thing about Sherrell's game. This comment alone makes me want to recruit him.
