If next years team is going to cut down the nets, then someone has to be the on court leader and QB. Bria needs to be the player that Renee Montgomery was her last two years at UConn. She has to take the leadership from Kelly or Caroline and make it her team. That's not to say, that Kelly and Caroline won't play important roles as they will. Both players can lead by example on how you have to work and besides scoring, players need to play defense, rebound and everything else that doesn't get you noticed in the Box Score or by fans.
Unlike Baylor who has Odyssey and ND who has Skylar, this team doesn't have an on court leader that can rally her teammates when the going gets tough. Kelly tried in the semi's but waited too long. The extra effort she displayed in the final two minutes, needed to happen more frequently in the game. Kelly and Caroline like what has happened too many times this year, weren't looking for their shots and or couldn't be an offensive threat, that it allowed defenders to pay more attention to KML & Bria. That made their job more difficult. It also clogged up the middle, making entry passes into the post more difficult and the team on most nights couldn't take advantage of the size differential that Stef usually had. Stef and Kiah contributed to this problem by not being tough enough in the low post, especially in the early part of the season. Both got better as the year went along, but there's more to be done.
Renee was more of a combo guard, just like Bria is and she was the floor general and the player that others looked up to to lead the way. Renee wanted the ball in her hand to either take the shot or distribute the ball to Tina or Maya. She demanded the ball and demonstrated that she knew what to do with it, during crunch time. I'm not blaming Bria, but she should have been the one bringing up the ball on the final play in regulation time, not Tiff. She has the better jump shot in transition and there's no doubt in my mind that she would have shot the ball or made a better pass. If Geno had called a time out, there's also no doubt in my mind Bria would have been bringing the ball up the court for a transition jump shot or a pass to Tiff or KML on the wing for a three point shot to win the game. A shot attempt would have been made and who knows if it would have gone in or not.
I think Bria deferred to the Tiff, Caroline and Kelly when it came to the leadership role for this team. She'll be with this talented group of recruits for two years and now is the time for her take her place as the leader of the team. She'll probably play the majority of the minutes, just like Renee did and she should have talented scorers on the floor with her to make her job easier. If Bria won't take the lead then I hope Moriah has the moxie and skills as a freshmen to do so. IMHO it would be asking to much for a freshmen to assume the role as the leader, that's why I think Bria has to do it.
Next years team needs an Odyssey or Skylar and IMHO Bria is the most qualified to take that role on what should be a more talented team. There needs to be a coach and QB on the floor when the going gets tough.
However, this years team accomplished a lot and what could have been if they had gotten one more rebound, one stop or made one more shot in regulation. We'd be talking about the game today wondering if this years team could do the impossible, Beat Baylor for the National Championship.
