Think this is where Andre will be missed the most. Don’t think we have a perimeter lockdown guy currently. Even though Solo and Ross may have that potential in the future. There is a simple question to ask about next year's team: who guards the opponent's alpha dog? Any candidates?
Pretty much exactly this. The starters are written in permanent ink, unless Castle really disappoints in practice. My predication.
Starters:
Castle, Newton, Spencer, Karaban, and Clingan
Bench to start the season:
Diarra, Ball, Ross, Stewart, Johnson
3 man bench end of season rotation:
Ball, Ross, Johnson
Going with Ross over Stewart based on his defensive highlights and ability to play off ball.
We have A LOT of options to go in for the direction want to play with Samson being the wildcard. If he can start tapping in on that NBA potential he gives lineups a lot of versatility.

If Newton hadn't come back, maybe Diarra gets that chance. Even then we'd have brought in a transfer PG to compete. With Newton? No chance.I think at the beginning of the year that Hurley will give Diarra every chance to grab the starting spot. When he goes out Spenser will provide instant offense of the bench. But Spenser will definitely be in at the end of games.
So Newton, Diarra, Castle, Karaban, Clingan.
Then Spenser for Diarra and Johnson for Karaban.
The next move is moving Johnson to center (where Hurey likes him). And taking out Newton. And perhaps Castle. Karaban comes back perhaps at the 3, and we will then see which freshmen are earning PT.

My guess is that both Newton and Diarra start. It gives the Huskies two ball handlers and allows Castle to begin his career playing off the ball at the three. That takes pressure off SC as he adjusts to the college game. Diarra is our best perimeter defender and a seasoned college player. Both those things are Hurley priorities.
It all just speculation but it seems like a Hurley move. Besides it's a more fun guess than the conventional wisdom.
Thank you. I would also like to add this comment by Newton made after the NBA combine.Tightly reasoned. One cannot but agree.
Castle isn’t here to play primarily off the ball. He will start and share PG duties with Newton. Also, we brought in Spencer to start, we need shooters. My guess is that both Newton and Diarra start. That's because Castle is a PG. But really he was off ball some last year with Jackson. Castle is going to have a similar role to Jackson as facilitator but bringing different skills to the role. Diarra isn't close to being one of our 5 best players.Thank you. I would also like to add this comment by Newton made after the NBA combine.
“[I’m] working on my shooting, playing off the ball – I think next year I’ll play on the ball and off the ball,” Newton said.
Hes not here to play primarily On ball either. I like that. He can and should do both, along with a couple others.Castle isn’t here to play primarily off the ball. He will start and share PG duties with Newton. Also, we brought in Spencer to start, we need shooters.
Kemba and Shabazz we're on and off ball a lot. Figure it's something like that.Hes not here to play primarily On ball either. I like that. He can and should do both, along with a couple others.

No, but to ease him into his college careeer, playing him off the ball (at least early in the season) makes a lot of sense.Castle isn’t here to play primarily off the ball. He will start and share PG duties with Newton. Also, we brought in Spencer to start, we need shooters.
And when that needs to happen it will be with Newton at PG. Diarra is not going to start for this team barring an injuryNo, but to ease him into his college careeer, playing him off the ball (at least early in the season) makes a lot of sense.

Yeah he will play SG/SF while Castle plays PG. What has Diarraa done besides play good D to think he can start at that important position for us? Honest question.Thank you. I would also like to add this comment by Newton made after the NBA combine.

Assuming Castle isn’t ready is a mistakeHe doesn't need to be on of the best five to start. He is one of the best on ball defenders, probably the best on the ball defender on the team. So starting him for defensive purposes and then bringing in a high octane scorer like Spenser is a very good strategy.
It also means that Diarra can bring the ball up court while Newton begins the game as the shooting guard and then Hurley can move Newton to the primary point when Spenser comes in.
It would give Hurley a lot of flexibility.
I'm happy we’re on the same page here with this freshman class Ant.Assuming Castle isn’t ready is a mistake
