Not sure on him.

He was given a golden opportunity with near unlimited funds and floundered at Oregon. The school had shown it could go from coach to coach without a dropoff until he took over.

Nothing at all tying him to the Northeast or anywhere east of the Mississippi.

It would be a fun hire just to see his name misspelled all the time.

I would not think Helfrich gets you anything beyond a splash for just the reasons you named: no ties to Eastern recruiting or coaches, and the fact that when given the keys to a Maserati he quickly turned it into an Accura. If winning for a few years with someone else's schemes and players is sufficient, why aren't we discussing Larry Coker?

Sounds like you're describing Kevin Ollie.

Spot on.

Except for the fact that Ollie played at UConn, was an assistant at UConn, lived in Ct, had kids in school in Ct and played on several NBA teams along the Eastern seaboard.

Please stop. First, the time for that comparison will be when he leaves here and other schools will have to balance his championship against the rest of his body of work (which is a long way from being written).

Second, Larry Coker won a championship, and Helfridge got to the playoffs, with teams that everyone knew were on that level when they took over. Name me one person not a UConn fanatic who when Calhoun left -- after a year when Drummond, Lamb, Roscoe and AO all took off early -- said "No problem, he's left KO enough to win a national championship in 2 years." Find me that quote and you'll have earned a lot of respect. Otherwise ....
