>>University of Connecticut sophomore tailback Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) was named the winner of the New England Football Writers' Association Gold Helmet Award for his performance against East Carolina last Friday night.

The weekly Gold Helmet is presented to the Division I (FBS and FCS) and II/III football players who have established himself for outstanding contributions to his team on the given week. The Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation is the sponsor of the program.

Newsome becomes the second Husky to win the award this year as redshirt sophomore quarterback Bryant Shirreffs (Jefferson, Ga.) won it the first week of the season for his game vs. Villanova.

Matt Silva of Framingham State was the Division II/III winner.

Newsome also earned American Athletic Conference Honor Roll recognition and was the ECAC Division I Offensive Player of the Week for his game vs. the Pirates.

Newsome had a career-high 179 yards of rushing with a pair of touchdowns in the 31-13 win over the Pirates. He had a 90-yard TD run, which was tied as the third-longest rush in school history. Newsome had a total of 244 all-purpose yards in the game.

He is currently ranked 16th in the country in all-purpose yards and 40th in the country in kickoff returns.<<
