Newsome out 3 to 4 weeks with clavicle/sternum issue

Damn.

I thought he was just hitting his stride this season.

He's the #2 running back in the country for receiving yards, right behind Barkley of Penn State. That's how good of a year he was having. We're going to definitely miss his production. Not sure that we have a player even close to being able to do what he does in terms of screen pass plays and "hot route" productivity...

Skanes was doing it when Arkeel wasn’t doing great early in the season

At least Mensah is back

I hope you're right. But just for comparison's sake, Skanes has the exact same amount of catches as Newsome (22 each), but about half the yardage (219 yards vs. 407 yards). Let's just hope that Skanes and others can step into that role and get us some nice production...

That hurts. No bye week to heal either. Guess Hopkins & Mensah will be getting more touches & will have to step it up.

Was the injury from the long catch & run that set up the 1st qtr FG? Looked like he was favoring his upper body when he got up from that tackle.

.-.
Skanes and I think Dixon is going to get more reps for those routes too. Problem with Skanes and Dixon is the defense has zero doubt about UConn trying to run them between the tackles like Lashlee does with Newsome.

What caused the injury? Anyone know?
Was it during that run with the face mask penalty?

Newsome may be the least replaceable player in our offense. Yes, we can line up with an extra wideout in the backfield, but then the defense knows what is coming. Plus, no one else on the team has the first step explosiveness and the ability to make people miss in tight spaces that Newsome has.

Tough break for the young man and the team.

I have confidence that he will make the bowl game that UConn will qualify for. He will likely score a touchdown or two!

That kind of ruined my day. The upside is we may find ourselves another unexpected weapon somewhere. We've had good luck with injuries unearthing great players for us over the years.

.-.
Mensah will step up. Big time coming out party for the kid on a big stage, by current UConn standards at least

.-.
Well that just stinks. He was doing well running but was out of the world catching the ball out of the backfield.

Someone has to step up and it has to be the true freshman which is a lot to put on him for sure. Maybe Skanes or someone else can help.

We’ll be fine. If there’s one thing we have it’s plenty of receivers and RB’s that bring different talents to the field. The most vital ingredient is Rhett Lashlee who will design the offense to compensate for the loss of Newsome.

If there was ever a season to get young guys (who have already burned red shirts) some experience, this is it. Mensah hasnt looked the same since the helmet to helmet hit he took against Temple(?). Hope he's ready, because he looked really explosive, and adept at finding space between the tackles before that.

I predict on Sat. night we'll all be commenting on how Lashlee was able to get Mensah in position to show off his burst.

2 big gains for him 30+ yards and at least 1 TD

I know he can run it if he gets blocks. I don't think as a true frosh you're going to see him able to replace Newsome as a receiver. But from your mouth to God's ear.

I'm not saying I know how

Newsome is more valuable then some posters will ever give him credit for. From a game plan standpoint, it’ll be hard to replace one of the most productive players in school history for the next few weeks. Hope he can come back and end his career on a high note. So....next man up. Hopkins, Mensah and Thompson combined will have to do the things an undersized, overrated running back with no breakaway speed has been doing for this offense.
