New York Liberty and Walt Hopkins part ways

As a Liberty fan, I don't know what to think. I liked the motion style he implemented but the team really hit a wall and went down hill. I know Sabrina was dealing with injuries. Anyhow, hope we snag a good one.

I'm with you....not really sure which way to react initially.
Hopkins had a lot to deal with: not having Asia Durr (due to lingering effects of COVID); losing Jocelyn Willoughby to injury; not getting Natasha Howard until mid-season; and, most prominently, having a Sabrina Ionescu who was probably still dealing with ankle issues.

I, too, liked the motion offense. When it was firing on all cylinders, like the first round of the playoffs, it was fun to watch. But too often, like that game, it seemed to fall just short.

Liberty management is going to have to find the right person to develop the talent that they have in the best manner to bring out individual and collective gain. Good luck to them.

If you blame him for the truly horrific 2020 the Liberty had, then you applaud this decision. If you credit him with 10 more wins in 2021 than in 2020, you dislike this decision. I thought his job in 2020 was possibly the worst coaching job I'd ever seen. The entire philosophy seemed to be shoot a three as soon as possible. He had Kiah Stokes hoisting threes. But I thought he did a really good job this past season, and the needle was pointing in the right direction.

I suspect that Ionescu, with all of her sports-related ventures and laser-like focus on top management, may have contributed to the parting of ways. She and some teammates did not look real enthused toward the end.

On Sabrina’s birthday!!!! Was that her wish?
