Based on seeing her in action on Saturday evening against the Sun, I cannot agree with that statement. In the game, I saw her score multiple baskets on quick backdoor cuts to the basket that ended with contested layups. I don't remember ever seeing her do that at UConn. I remember a few times when she got uncontested layups after the defense went out to chase KML or Stewie, but I don't remember that she was ever asked to beat a defender to the basket 1-on-1 and take a pass for a layup.Stokes is not do anything that she didn't do at UConn.
The larger mystery (at least to me) is that players don't seem to have an impact on the WNBA that is in proportion to their impact in college. Obviously for 4 years at UConn, KML had a much bigger impact on the team that Kiah, but so far in the W, the exact opposite is true. Likewise for Kelly and Tiffany -- Kelly had more impact in college, but Tiff seems to have more impact at the pro level.
I think the key may be that raw athletic talent may be a much bigger factor in the pros than in college, and the mental part of offense and defense may play a lesser role. Is that because at the pro level, everyone has a command of the mental aspects, so the factor that distinguishes one player from another is simply the raw ability to execute? Maybe -- I really don't know.
