Interesting read on unis and their impact on recruits. Not looking to stir u up a "I hate new helmets" mess just know a lot here think unis play a role with kids, myself included. Was a good read about the validity of that.

I think this article suggests that the impact of uniforms on recruiting is pretty much overblown. If you look at actual recruiting, I don't think it really shows up. It is like an urban myth. Look at the player quotes...if it comes down to 2 schools that are equal in every other way, maybe. But how often does that happen, really? The other thing is that whether a particular uniform is cool or lousy is pretty subjective. finally, I think the Oregon example is a little overblown. It might have had some limited impact when Oregon was the only one doing it and they stood out. But when everyone except the real power programs are changing uniforms every 3rd day, I think I read someone had 15 combinations but could only play a maximum of 14 games, I'm not sure the impact is there any more. When Joe Namath wore white football shoes it was considered so controversial that the league actually considered banning them. A few years later, it was pretty common and now nobody gives it a second thought. When UNLV first took the court wearing long basketball shorts, some commentators were outraged and complained that it was part of their thuggish image. Now it would be shocking to see a team come out in the short ones that everyone wore for decades. That is where we're heading with these bizarre uniforms, I think. Couple of years, and it will be a big deal because some school is returning to classic design and ESPN will write about how classic styles are attracting recruits.

It's not a conscious thing like "OK I finalized my list to two schools now it's time to decide" it's more subtle in terms of maybe a 6 year old kid seeing an Oregon game without knowing anything about Oregon or even about football and that making an impression, and then building on that first impression as he gets older. If it's a kid in say Texas, the kid probably thinks UT's burnt orange is butt-ugly the first time he sees it - I know I did. So he gravitates to another school UNLESS his family are UT alums and they take him to games or whatever, then over time he gets brainwashed into loving the burnt orange as he learns about the Longhorns football history and tradition.

That's the part that I think is urban myth. Charlie Weis can talk all he wants about his fancy schmancy new uniforms. His recruiting class was 55th, while Texas and Oklahoma with their very traditional uniforms were #15 and #23. It is a combination of urban myth, and doing what everyone else is doing, that's all. Charlie Weis by virtue of being Charlie Weis, Tom Brady's mentor/former Notre Dame coach is getting into places another coach isn't. he might have been a mediocre head coach, bu this name recognition is higher than his predecessor. He wants to credit fancy schmancy new duds for that, that's fine, I guess. Penn State., with all the negative publicity and a scholarship reduction, still manages to out recruit Maryland with its fancy dan uniforms.

While uniforms are not the top of the list....they are one of the things that a school can control. UConn can't control school tradition....geography...but they can design uniforms that at least get some kids to look at UConn.

They aren't the biggest factor...but they are a factor and if you can get Nike to pay to help you in this area...why not do it?

"Recruits think, 'look at that helmet, if they wore this jersey with those pants.' Recruits love that stuff. So if it gives you a chance to get more players because they like the stuff, and ultimately help you win, that's what you have to do."

That's why Charlie Weis is a Head Coach. Uniforms don't matter nearly as much as the program's ability to win and get kids to the NFL. That's it. If uniforms are so important, why haven't USC, LSU, Bama, Texas, et al changed theirs (save for maybe a minor font change) in forever?

USC, LSU, Bama, Texas, etc. all have tradition, top confrence, and winning history under there belts. Updating there uniforms is not a need for these "big time" programs, all they have to do is tweek there uniforms and have alternate uniforms. Teams like Rutgers, Uconn, Cinn, Maryland etc. needed/s a major change for some type of buzz since these schools do not have tradition, top conference, and winning history under there belts. Let's face it, uniforms play some type of role in recruiting today and there's nothing you and I can do.
