Congratulations on your installation as new UConn President, Dr. Susan Herbst. Glad you skipped the Dukie blue you wore when your selection was announced.

Now, get your arse in full gear and prove this may be one rare instance for UConn to have any association with Duke. As in, Dukie alumna, Susan Herbst, leveraging her ACC (or Big 10) connections and proving her worth.Save our athletic programs and potential future success, time to earn your keep Susie!

What's wrong with the UConn English Dept that it isn't making money? At most big schools, that dept. does.

Do tell.

What ya mean? Are you asking how? It's off topic. Send a message, and I'll run it down. Can give you links to this as well. The money losers are expensive science programs with low grants and small Humanities departments with few students. Otherwise, most departments on a campus generate cash.

Sure, you brought up the off topic subject and others may be interested. Carry on with the highlights. Meanwhile, the original topic focused on Herbst and the potential for her to keep UConn in a leading athletic conference versus falling to something on par with CUSA+.

I just read the linked article and responded to it. But the highlights are simple. Since such departments have low overhead (just salaries, no materials), the cost of those is met by number of students. Profits come from Masters programs (these are cash cows for departments since no financial aid is ever involved), summer and distance learning programs (same story as Masters, no financial aid, pure profit), endowments and gifts to the departments, and the big money winner, writing centers.
