Saban can stockpile coaches in analysts/non-coaching positions why not Mora!

If there's one thing us Huskies fans should be used to it is the archaic hiring and firing practices for athletic coaches as a function of state laws.

Since he’s obviously the DC, why is he not being hired as the DC?

Are you sure he is coming in at that level of commitment?

Maybe he does just want to get his toes wet as a special assistant.

Or, someone please start a new thread. This is embarrassing!
Why would a fan be embarrassed ? This guy is not coming in to be the new DC with 10 days to start the season.
In Jim Mora I trust and we saw in a short time he is not putting up with anyone that is not in line like with the Spanos situation.
I doubt this guy will have control of the defensive side of the ball right away but a voice of what he sees for Jim, great addition to the team.

I’d assume with the timing of the hire that he’s going to be more of a game prep, film study kind of analyst. Setting the game plan up with the staffs. Right in line with game prep week. I’m totally just assuming…but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me with the timing! Welcome coach!

This seems like unreservedly good news. Great resume, NFL connections up the wazoo and knows D backwards and forwards. Gets to work with Jackson Mitchell this year and teach him how to be the next Khalil Mack.

Because UConn is out of coaching spots. You'd have to drop a coach to make him DC.
I thought they were off the hook for Spanos salary this year? if so then Mora is DC and HC getting HC salary and Charlton is OC and QB coach getting OC salary. I was hoping the DC and QB coachs' monies were spread around to help the other assistants or can be used for bringing in people like a Pagano but wasn't sure if special assistant salaries come out of the coaching budget.

Forgot they created a new passing coordinator/offensive recruiting head position for Marianelli and hired a new TE coach...very much elevated on the coaching hierarchy if they list by such.

Mora is a smart dude. This gives him more time to work with the offense.

Obviously he thought he needed help on the defensive side of the ball but didn't want to completely give up the coordinator position. Also nice that he is a LB specialist, should be a very good new set of eyes to analyze the position.

I was wondering the same thing. Thanks. So it sounds like he will do everything except be on the sidelines.

Seems like semantics to me but many other programs have oodles of "analysts" who aren't allowed in the coaching box on game day but do a ton of work during the week with game film and game planning. Purely anecdotal but I definitely am more familiar with the term "analyst" than "special assistant" when it comes to these experienced dudes coming in for a year or two to help out the staff.

Just more investment in football. Maybe he was available. I imagine it relieves some of Jimbo’s DC responsibilities and planning.

Lots of possibilities on what he was brought in to do.

What about he's being brought in to mentor one of the defensive position coaches to help that coach become a DC in a year or two?
Or, he can come in and shadow the position coaches to give Mora another view point on how well each coach is doing and what they can do to become better coaches?

From today’s Coach Mora availability:

-> MORA WELCOMES PAGANO

Mora has known John Pagano since he was six-years-old. They worked together for the New Orleans Saints.

So when Mora had the opportunity to bring the 26-year NFL coaching veteran here as a special assistant to the head coach, it was an easy call.

"We go way back," Mora said. "Our families are really close. We have similar backgrounds.

"He's a tremendous defensive mind, tremendous football mind. He's had a lot of success at the NFL level as a defensive coordinator in San Diego and Oakland and as a position coach in other places he's been. He spent some time with us in the spring and he bonded with our staff. Our players really took to him. He gave them great advice whether it was about football or about life. He had a willingness and desire, and he's passionate about football, and wanted to get back closer to it. So we took the opportunity to hire him."

Pagano most recently served as the outside linebacker coach with the Denver Broncos in 2020 and 2021. He served as a senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach for the Houston Texans during 2018-19. Before that, Pagano was the then San Diego Chargers' defensive coordinator from 2012-16 and the Raiders' assistant head coach in 2017. <-

Assistance <<

-> “He’s been a tremendous asset to our whole staff, he’s been a tremendous asset to me. Our football backgrounds are very similar, our philosophies about, not just defensive football, but football and how to run a team are very similar. He’s a guy that has a lot of experience that I can bounce things off,” Mora said. “We have a fairly young defensive staff and I have a tremendous amount of confidence in them, but when you’re able to bring in a guy that has so much experience at the highest level and had so many successes at the highest level, it can only help your team. I’m really excited that he’s here.” <-
