New Naven Newbies

You can pick up on the Uconn comments at around the 4 minute mark. Greg has been all in on Uconn in the early season, and he tells it like it is based on what he saw here.

If you don't want to listen, Uconn gets a stock down, they looked "gross" and don't appear to have fixed as much as they thought. Now that is jumping the gun because it is early and there was no Tarris/Mullins, but an objective opinion on what was seen against UNH. It was a gross, gross game. I apologize to all the homers who just can't hear objective feedback on where we are, even if it's 1 game/2 exhibition games (and an entire season last year to watch a lot of these guys). To call that game an eyesore would not be a compliment to eye sores.

Oh, man, Greg said this?

They don’t pass the “ Eye Test” and I’d like to think we’ve seen enough great teams the last 30 years to know.
Go watch some other top teams this week it’s eye opening.

March1

And see if the doubters are right or wrong.

I will take my lumps if wrong. I will.

I bleed blue but I have major concerns.
Totally, I'd say let's see where we are on 12/9. We have a MAJOR window coming up fast that we need to capitalize on, BYU in 10 days, AZ in 14. Let's say we go 2-4, our seeding potential is drastically reduced because we just won't have many chances to make up ground in the BE. We have 5 games against top 15 type competition that is going to dictate the path in March. This team isn't 23 or 24 good but could be good enough, so seeding matters.

So yeah, I'd wish we looked a little more connected early in, even without Tarris/Mullins. There's no reason that we shouldn't with all the continuity, which is why we are preseason 4. We're not going to have Mullins for most of those 5.

I dunno man. I went and rewatched part of the game over lunch. Every single offensive set we ran over the first 5min of the game looked pretty darn good,...maybe not "vintage" 23-24 team good, but each had good ball movement and ended with wide open looks. I think you're trying too hard to be hypercritical.

Maybe if I watched again I'd see differently - real time, it wasn't pretty. I'll take your word for it. Gave them a pass in the exhibitions because of refs and fact it was exhibition.

There is no way to know what we have in Silas, Malachi, Koroma, Furphy, Braylon. How could we????

and Ross/Stew have improved.

Plus, No Reed.

Only 1 of our Nattys did we expect.

"But other ranked teams whooped their opponents!" Okay. Lay 1k on Arizona to win it all. I dare you

Yall crazy

1 Game in and more peeps down on us than up....boneyard boogie I guess.

@Jaydumo20 agree that Ross + Strewart are better than last years versions. So is Karaban and Ball didn't have a terrible night.

Demary looked good but I'd say on a par with Newton's early games for us - got some points, ran some offense, wasn't particularly dazzling on D...but let time go by...1 game is way too short to judge. No Tarris, No Mullins, No Furphy. And their big Pasha did most of the damage on Frosh Reibe so no doubt Tarris would have gotten some fouls on him and overall we'd be +6 on just that matchup and win by 30.

And we won by 24... I mean let's not act like we won by last second buzzer beater.

I'd say two of our natties we generally felt good about early season.

I really, really like Arizona. Burries didn't even play well in that one, and he's a lottery pick.

As a frequent visitor of this board I can promise you that was not the general feeling. People wanted Hurley fired all season all the way up until the middle of the NCAA Tournament

Only 1? Come on. 1999 we were lost 2 games to ranked teams and were a 1 seed. Ranked 1 or 2 all year basically Won the Big East and tournament when it was a really tough league that ended the year with 3 top 20 teams. 2004 we were ranked 7 had the national player of the year won the Big East tournament in a league with 5 Top 25 teams (only 2 top 10). Went into the tournament as the highest 2 seed. And 2024 we were at worst given a punchers chance but most people expected us vs Purdue and at least 50% had us favored. Probably more. 11, 24 and 23 I’ll grant you. I would say 14 we were way under seeded because of the conference situation

These guys are Big 10 shills, one of them definitely hates UConn, they were talking so much smack about northwestern beating us in round 2 in 2024, and then picked against us every game after. Yawn.

What's with all the negativity on here the last couple days? It's been 1 game against an inferior opponent and without a couple important players. Why all the prognosis of doom? I don't quite remember what it was like on here in January 2023 but that must have been fun. And things turned out pretty well by April 2023.
I have a theory that winning back to back created a divide here between people who are grateful for the 2 titles, and those who expect that level of success every season or just don’t like Hurley. Nothing else makes sense.

Greg has been stroking UConn all season, so not him. He’s been wearing UConn jumpers on the pod. They have their B10 allegiances but generally pretty non sided for the most part. They’re all about heavy flows of content, and in that stay on top of the sport like maniacs. They literally don’t miss the smallest storylines.

In 2024 UConn was #1 in the polls and the overall number 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They were the betting favorite to win it all. Doesn't that seem like way more than a "puncher's chance"?

I don’t know if I’d agree. Now I know as fact there are a few here that don’t like Hurley, why I don’t know.

I’d like to see Dan Hurley make a nice run to clear some of the stress he puts on himself. I feel like one more would just take some of that unneeded pressure he puts on himself. Those last two titles carry lots of runway on my end, once in a lifetime fan experience.

Dan Hurley is always going to put pressure on himself. It’s how he’s wired, it’s in his blood

I hear you. In retrospect it seems clear. But i was a sophomore on campus in 99 and the feeling wasn't one of "this thing
is ours". D*ke was a machine and we
hadnt won before. I was shocked when that buzzer sounded and so were a lot of people....including KEA. No one was shocked after '24. But I do see your point.

It was a team that recruited well in their first game as a D1 school. They punched well out of their weigh class. They did a good job and UConn thought they could throw their jerseys on the court and win by 50+. Give UNH their due and move on. A win is a win and it won't matter in 3 weeks or so when they play varsity teams. Enjoy the ride and for crying out loud go Huskies!

This doesn't comport with anything we know to be true

Doubt KEA was shocked or anyone on the UConn team. The world was however.
