One of the few gripes I have with Hurley is that he stuck with the Sanogo/Whaley pairing when it was clear as day that it was just not a good pairing offensively. Hopefully we can Sampson can become the stretch 4 this team desperately needs
This.

But the bigger issue is that the staff did not. Or could not adjust from this. The analytics show that it’s not our best line up. Yet we rode it to our demise.

God I hate everything about this Teddy Allen character.
It means he did what he came to do against UConn. He punked us in more ways than one. I have nothing but respect for him.

Never seen a player make a UConn team submit to their will.

Usually we have teams that can counter another player going off matching their intensity and production. This team doesn't have that, and now I realize never did.

Anyway I expect Allen to put up about 8 points his next game.

While calls to fire Hurley are ridiculous, he does deserve the lion share of the blame for that clunker. How did he allow his team to sleepwalk through that first half? Where was the urgency and intensity and why couldn’t he influence the pace of play? Terribly disappointing.

UConn had no leaders on this team! If they did, someone would’ve stepped up to Allen and gotten in his face! Kid was running his mouth and our guys just took it. Believe it or not, that says a lot about the mental toughness of this team. He just showed us up, peacocked, ran his mouth and… crickets from our guys! Come on - someone show some fire and pride!

Any offensive set where your best players are walking or standing around, off the ball, is garbage. Saw way too much of that from Martin.

But it was our defense that let us down.

No passion. No intensity. No luck. No win.

There's always next year again, right?
Just not a smart team...
Defensive lapses. Poor offense for long stretches.
Bad fouls end of the game.
If Cole doesn't come back, next year will be a long one...
He won't come back. Don't count on anybody else. Just a hunch. They are tired. Very tired.

You gotta think this is on Hurley. You have to know there is literally one guy on the other team that can beat you, and he dropped 37. Not sure what the hell they did at practice all week.

With that being said, Hurley is still a fantastic recruiter and him and his staff develop players relatively well. He falls extremely short in the in-game coaching area. X’s and O’s stink, and he has no clue how to adjust.

Getting and keeping good players can only get you so far. If Hurley can’t improve his in game coaching, he has to hire someone on his staff who can do it for him. Something has to change there. I still think he does too many things well to say he’s on the hot seat, but two years in a row is not a fluke.

On to next year.

Has anyone ever considered the admittedly remote possibility that the teams we play want to win too, that they have players that might be equal to or a bit better than ours, that someone could go off for 37 points (even with decent defense in their face), that maybe, just maybe, we are not quite as good as fans think we are, that maybe the match up didn't favor us? We've been suspect all year -- no definitive offense. It caught up to use tonite. Actually, I think Hurley did a really good job with the cards he was dealt this year. I worry about next season. Lots of pieces to work with, but no one to organize and drive the offense.
Like the pregame commentator said, "It's all about matchups"
This was not a good matchup for us. NMSU had quick guards who could shoot the 3, and had defensive quickness

I mean at a certain point its also gotta be on the players right? Hurley did not coach a good game at all but he also did brick shot after shot and lose Teddy Allen every play. He didn't run Teddy over after an incredible defensive possession. He didn't make a middle school play and run to the corner down 3 with his head down. It's on the players at this point. Hurley's seat is starting to warm up but at the end of the day we had what, 1 top 100 players on the entire playing roster today? We have 3 top 60 freshman right now, two top 75 kids coming in next year, and a big recruit the year after. The real MAJOR offense is not getting any of these current freshman truly game ready for next year. Because when we lose Cole Martin Polley Whalley were gonna have a LOT of youth

Seton Hall/Kadary Richmond Part II.

An inexcusable lack of adjustments from Hurley on Allen. I do not understand how a coach being paid millions of dollars cannot keep trying new things when a single player is killing you. I don't really get fired up about sports anymore, especially when it comes to losses, but this one is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I have a feeling in my gut that Hurley is not the guy and that's not a reactionary statement. He's been here for four years now. There are too many concerning patterns.

Hurley's two NCAA games here are two of the ugliest basketball games I can recall watching. Tonight was just abysmal, though not as eye-gougingly bad as last year's loss to Maryland. I cannot believe how flat we came out. No energy, NMSU was tougher and played harder the entire first half. That is inexcusable. We lost so many close games this year, largely because of Hurley. He does not have the slightest clue or instinct as to when to call a timeout. Calhoun was a master. At the same time, so many stupid plays down the stretch, starting with Sanogo's foul. I'm not sure anyone besides Cole made a positive play in the last few minutes. It was terrible basketball.

Thus far, this era is the antithesis of Calhoun teams. Hurley's teams seem to play their worst down the stretch. We should have won so many close games this year that we lost. We should have won tonight. We should have beaten Nova in the BET semis.

Hurley has a ton of soul searching to do, from roster construction to game-planning to in-game adjustments. Teams that have a single reliable ballhandler are going to be terrible offensively. We have no idea what Diggins is going to be; Hurley needs to stop messing around and find a point guard in the transfer portal who is guaranteed to give us production next season. More guards, more guards, more guards. Have too many guards, not too many bigs. You can survive without enough bigs, you cannot survive without enough guards.

The "two traditional bigs" thing needs to be thrown in the trash. It's 2022. Yet, we have tons of traditional bigs on the roster and more coming in. Whaley's presence was so detrimental to the offense over the last few weeks. Teams just stopped caring about him and sagged off. He had the gravity of an ant while pretending to be a stretch 4. Combine that with a lack of ballhandlers and when your other big needs space to operate on the block and you have a mess.

I don't know how a team that was worried at the start of the season about finding PT for everyone was reduced to a six-man rotation in the postseason. Little production from a highly-touted recruiting class, Akok will never be the same after the injury.

Such a frustrating loss. I don't know how anyone can have blind faith in Hurley at this point. He can recruit but good grief he has leaps and bounds to make as an in-game coach.

God I hate everything about this Teddy Allen character.
The kid had a very rough upbringing with violence in the family. As a last resort, his family enrolled him at Boys Town. Read up on Boys Town as it was initially for orphans, but now also includes at risk youth. He has had trouble fitting in at various schools and tonight was probably the highlight of his life so far.

It’s been clear for a while. And eventually, it will start to hurt with recruits again

Hurley really sucks sometimes. Like, really freaking bad. HOW DO YOU NOT MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT ON ALLEN ALL NIGHT?!?
Exactly where were the satellite defenders shading over to allen when he was dribbling? Allen wasn’t looking to pass and even if he did so what, the other guys were not looking to shoot

You can't keep laying eggs in the biggest moments. He needs a good season next year or his seat will start to get hot. Results business.
If Hurley has the exact same year next season and brings in another top 10 recruiting class his seat won’t even be luke warm.

Sonogo seems to e lost the last half of the season. You can't even throw him a pass. He bobbles it. Doesn't pay attention. Following a shooter 30 feet from the basket on a three. To me that was the turning point.

UConn didn't have anyone able to guard Allen. They tried several players. Jackson had trouble staying in front of him, Cole was too small to effectively guard him, especially when Allen was getting his shot at the end of the shot clock. Martin was ineffective. I don't think fans have to worry about anyone leaving early for the NBA. The freshmen class was a disappointment, especially after all the preseason hype. UConn will probably lose a few to the transfer portal in search of playing time.
