Few would have expected UNM, which played 15 of its 17 regular-season games outside of New Mexico because of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions, to come in as the top seed. But the Lobos, picked to finish sixth in the league’s preseason poll, are not the only party crashers in the tournament bracket.
No. 2 seed UNLV was picked to finish ninth, No. 3 Colorado State was picked eighth, and No. 4 Fresno State was considered an overwhelming favorite. If that’s not sufficiently odd, consider that host UNLV might well prefer to have this tournament moved. The Lady Rebels went 8-0 in MWC road games but just 4-4 at home.
