New Hurley interview with Rothstien

Before UConn, URI, even St. Benedict's he was a Jersey City guy through and through. Standing on corners with his boys with some beers catcalling the ladies.

Good to see the maturity in character, personality, etc. All due credit to him, Andrea, parents.

I live in Jersey City for now 26 years and I have met so many high school friends of his that also matured so it's great to see from a wide perspective. His parents are so nice, humble and I benefited from a few years watching St. Anthony dominate before it was shuttered is a Montesori school now. Times change.

Good interview thanks for posting @Blades

Standout moments from the podcast:
1. Bob Sr. advised Dan to take the Laker job. Love Bob Sr. but thrilled Dan didn’t listen.
2. Dan essentially said he will be at UConn the rest of his career unless UConn “gets tired of me.” Although mentioned coaching in the Euro League in his 60s? Think that may have been a joke!

Did Hurley just settle the Solo Ball height argument? He says 6-3.5 in bare feet. Should we believe him? 😀
Does anyone remember seeing him next to Newton in 23-24? Newton’s NBA draft combine barefoot height measurement was 6’3.25”. Although, Solo may well have grown some since then.

Since we are on the topic Jersey Shore. I grew up in CT and spent many summer days as kid and then young adult in Wildwood. Honestly don’t know if that qualifies as the Jersey Shore.

But this summer for two weeks I took my family on vacation and we rented a home in Seaside Heights. Because I know that is Jersey Shore😀. My wife a kids both boy one 16 and one 11 had a great time. I think we might do it again next June before my oldest heads to college.

Maybe next year the Yankees will have a real team with a real manager as we did go to four games while we were there. It is a haul to drive back and forth in one day so we ended up splitting the four into two games during each of the weeks we were there and stayed in Woodbridge the night after the first game.

But all in all we loved the trip……it was hot but we live in South Florida….but unlike were we live there were days and nights at least a few of them where we got relief from the heat.

The weather forecast for Palm Beach this week is 95 for a high with a heat index of plus 105 and 80 for a nighttime low. And of course a 30% chance of thunderstorms every day. I really don’t think we need weathermen during the summer. It is rinse and repeat. June 15th to October 15th. Unless we get a big storm……not going to say it though. I am a big believer in mojo….

I from now on I will listen carefully to whatever Rothstein says or writes about us. Clearly Danny likes him.

Saw this from Ormond Beach, FL so a little North of Palm Beach but howdy neighbor!

Just doing a crazy August week in Florida for FIL 85th bday and a 48 person golf Saturday.

A vast majority of coaches like Rothstein. Sure, his “persona” can rub people the wrong way, but from all accounts, he’s a good dude who is trusted and he’s hustled his way to where he is today.

Started listening on the drive home and looking forward to finishing.

Jersey Shore: my favorite story is that the first summer my parents divorced in the mid-90s, my dad took me to one of his favorite spots from his childhood: Asbury Park. What he didn’t realize that forty years since his last visit, the town was a shell of its former self, deep in an economic depression and being a generally unsafe and unattractive spot. Add on to that, the August weather was cloudy, rainy and in the 60s, furthering my dad’s disappointment. But honestly, I had a good time and appreciated my dad’s effort.

1) Rationale was funny in that he said Bob Sr doesn't have much cred on career advice having stayed at St B's all his life.

Other take away, when discussing Jay Wright staying at Nova after being woo'ed by the NBA, was that he doesn't drive home thinking how much he loves Uconn as much as he is appreciative for all the opportunities it's presented him. Didn't fully know how to read that one.

Sea Girt is kinda the Madison or Westport of the Jersey Shore. Highly residential and wealthy.

Yay Danny.

Yeah that comment was a bit strange but I took it as he’s too focused on the here and now that there’s no time to be sentimental about UConn. His actions speak louder than words and by turning down LA and never even considering the Knicks I’d say he “loves” UConn.

I think he just means he didn't/doesn't have any other established connection/love for UConn (e.g. former student, player or fan). I think he does love UConn what it has done for him and its dedication to basketball.

But did you go to the Stone Pony???

It's given him the opportunity to win national championships. Maybe he still likes having that opportunity.

He pretty clearly prefaced the comment by saying that Jay Wright - who Rothstein mentioned when he asked the question - said that about Villanova retrospectively and it wasn't something that he was sitting in his office reflecting on every day. I think Hurley's probably the same. Not a ton of basking in the comfort of where he's at.
