New Head Coach Criteria/Wishes

It's was s/

But really we should just keep it easy, go get Jason Candle and when he has enough success to get poached in a few years we promote his DC Vince Kehres who has already been a highly successful D3 coach and has the Toledo Defense absolutely killing it.
My bad. Sometimes you never know on here. 😂

Not a totally crazy idea. I don't follow Syracuse football much, but as I recall he had a few good seasons his first 2 or 3 years. they slid this year after their QB got hurt. He's known as a good recruiter, and I believe he's from the northeast.

This is his second season.

My bad. Sometimes you never know on here. 😂

We literally have someone who thinks we should hire a D3 coach. So yes.

CCSU is actually pretty knowledgeable so I assumed he was being sarcastic.

I'd say this about comparing Kelly and Petrino to Belichick. It's one thing to hire a jerk. It's another to hire a jerk whose personal problems are interfering with being a coach day to day. That puts Belichick way behind a Kelly or a Petrino. Not that we're getting any of them.
If referencing Brian Kelly, it was largely his off field activities that interfered with his coaching at LSU. He was playing golf 5 days a week and having multiple affairs.

Cahill and Carty are gettable, it appears that Chesney is not. If you put young up and coming HEAD Coaches on a sliding scale, guys like Carty would be upper middle, while Chesney would be almost off the scale. Get all my info from the BY, so have no original names to offer up, but the up and coming young Head Coach is the model I prefer. Would have kept Mora out of the mix if that was criteria last time.

Doubt Dave will be confined by parameters, so more of a Best Athlete available approach, which may entail a variety of candidates from Moraesque to Chesneyesque. Don't think it'll be a coordinator unless he goes with Sammis. I personally think Sammis would be a solid and unspectacular hire. He would succeed.

.-.
Picking a head coach is about as predictable as a 1st round NFL QB panning out.

Programs bigger and smaller than UConn have tried young up and comers, poached coaches at the peak of their careers, NFL coaches retreads, coaches in waiting,.. ........

And it always ends up being a backwards looking "I told you so" when a coach does or doesn't work out.

I am confident the UConn program reputation and the money UConn does have allows it to find a competent coach

If going coordinator with no HC experience then might as well go with Sammie. He has been successful. Perception would be UConn couldn’t attract or afford a good HC. Would he be good? Who knows?

.-.
These jobs have become very complex and the head coach will need to be able to work the press, the in state politicians, the upper admins at the school, the trustees and be able to engage the fan base.

This is all in addition to being able to run a top level program in an exceptionally dynamic environment at a place where there isn't a lot of history or image to sell.

It can be done, but the right guy will be able to find quality assistants and the school will need to be able to fund the staff in addition to (new to the equation) revenue sharing.

One area where I had been concluded Mora was the limited number of players who developed through the system and the corresponding reliance on the transfer portal. Yes, the portal can help fill a number of holes but we cannot expect to sustain much of anything if the number of starters new to the program continued to be as high as it had been the past couple of seasons. At some point the bulk of the roster will have to be players who have been two, three, fours years with the school and the bulk of the starters will need to be guys who will end up being multi-year starters here, more often than not with an additional season having seen the field in spot play as a backup.

This is the candidate evaluation funnel, Start at number 1 and start cutting at each round:
1. Previous Head Coaching exp., doesn't matter where. What matters is have you successfully run an entire program,
2. Talent Evaluator, specifically the portal. Are you watch film, researching prospects from all over the country, checking their references for work ethic, character, and leadership like you are a stalker.
3. Recruiter, see above, can you make efficient use of resources that are above most G5 programs and opportunities better than bottom feeding P4 programs. (For example, can you out recruit portal kids against the BCs', Cuses', and Rutgers' of the world)
4. Players, Can you bring a certain number of your old players/recruits with you assuming they are worth bringing, preferably including a QB as good a JF without needing 3 years for him to develop.
5. Can DB actually convince you to come here and stay at least 5 years like Mora did. Staying is a cherry on top, getting 5 years from someone with a run like Mora is the best we can expect as long as we are an independent/non-P4.

Why doesn't football have insiders? One of you must be a donor of note. Even if it's not a regular poster. The BBall board has winks from @Matrim55 and that bag of hot air Chief was on the move back to the Big East early. Where are the Football insiders? Drop a nugget.
Subscribe to Storrs Central. I'm hoping they have something.

After what we went through the last coaching cycle…UConn fans know the process is unpredictable. No one predicted or asked for Mora.

The UConn job is a very unique job..and the coach needs to have unique qualities. DB has seen successful and unsuccessful approaches to the job and you would have to think he will use that experience to find the best candidate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the coach that is hired is someone not mentioned in any of these threads.

.-.
A coach that you pay less than Mora frees up money for players. Every dollar counts for UConn. There is upside for paying a name coach and upside for not. That would be my argument for Sammis versus some other maybe guy. That plus continuity. Some of these guys being suggested could end up as fish out of water - even (maybe especially) name guys. And a lot of name guys will be on others’ short lists as the dominoes fall in the next few weeks. Sammis plus a solid GM? Where do those GMs come from? There have to be solid GM trees developing in CFB somewhere.

That’s way too complicated.

He’s knowledgeable on resources that we have. But I wouldn’t call him an insider. The Big East Taliban don’t think he is very accurate.

Georgia wouldn’t have hired Kirby Smart then. Freeman, Dabo, etc.
