New Head Coach Criteria/Wishes

Whoever they hire should bring back some similar names like Chandler Whitmer as OC and Julien Campenni for DL. Maybe get Trey Holtz as some offensive coach to bring the third generation to CT!

Just having fun here guys because Dave is the only one that knows anything about what's happening.

I'd say this about comparing Kelly and Petrino to Belichick. It's one thing to hire a jerk. It's another to hire a jerk whose personal problems are interfering with being a coach day to day. That puts Belichick way behind a Kelly or a Petrino. Not that we're getting any of them.
I think anyone from that “pool” would be a bad hire. I also don’t know football like they do so I am inexperienced to comment. I’m just a fan.

Reno and Chesney are the first places you look, I think. Kick the tires on Cahill but he is not a better option than Reno.

UMass has been awful but Harasymiak is a good coach who I'm sure wants lifeline. Probably can't make that hire just from PR blowback alone, though.

To me, the rules have changed so completely that having won in college in the past is less important. Coordinators and assistants will coach. You need someone who can figure out how to allocate the salary pool among potential recruits, potential transfers and returning players. That's job #1, and I'm not even sure how you evaluate that other than from interviews as the rules are changing so materially so consistently.

I think people have university staff regarding NIL. That can't operate in a vacuum.

Hiring is different today, but I'm not so sure they need a coach with financials in mind.

There's so much coaching talent out there. I think what the university needs and has accomplished is to show that despite being independent, we're still relevant and can attract talent, go to good bowl games and send people to the NFL.

That, in my opinion, is what the university needs to continue to build, in short it reputation and branding.

Try to get the JMU coach, give him more money than mora or a little more than he would have gotten in 2026. Jmu coach can bring his players.

I would love to hire the JMU coach, but I think he may be looking for a bigger opportunity. A young up and coming offensive minded coach would be nice, but at this point in our development I think we need a big name. Part of the attraction of UConn to kids was the Mora name and his NFL connections.

I like Reno as a coach, but we really need someone that can handle the portal. Being from Yale, there is no portal action there. Of course, he can get a couple other coaches on the staff to do that I suppose.

At this point, I'm just going to sit back and watch the board. It would be a great Christmas if we could come on here, look at the new hire, and have about 75% of us think the new hire is great.

You couldn't get a 75% consensus on here for anything other than the superiority of CT pizza.

Reno is a good football coach. But as I said, that's less important today than being able to buy an entire roster for cash every year.

There wasn’t a portal at Holy Cross and that didn’t hold Chesney back at JMU.

The hardest part of the portal is being willing to play in it.

Would be nice-- But I can't see a sitting FBS coach leaving for an Independent and no real shot at the playoffs.

I think UConn is a better landing place for Zack than FAU.

FAU is a lower tier university and will probably stay there for a while.

I know everyone talks about expansion and realignment, but it will happen.

UConn's basketball brand puts us in the same category as Duke and Kansas, strong basketball schools with football lagging.

The UConn basketball identity gives the football program media relevance. FAU doesn't have anything close to that.

Independence gives us better scheduling. Many ACC teams like scheduling UConn.

We have much better facilities.

Overall, long term, UConn has a better ceiling than FAU. I would take a chance with Zack and I think he would listen.

Chesney is not leaving JMU for UConn. They are close to a Top 25 team and just made the jump only a few years ago. With Cignetti’s success at Indiana, JMU HC will be sought after by others, it’s only a matter of time.

Prior to UMass, he looked good on paper. Success at Maine, P4 coordinator but this season was a disaster. They plan on fixing it by focusing on New England recruits. Sounds very FCS to me

Here’s mine:

1. Must be a head coach or was one at a high level.

2. Will bring coaches and talent with him. The great ones always do.

3. Must be able to thrive and win in the NIL/Rev Share environment and not cry about its complexity and ambiguity.

Straightforward enough?
He said UConn FB does not get enough credit - SABAN. Period. (JK)

He has one year of head coaching experience with a 4-7 record. Hard pass until he's shown more, especially since I'm assuming he will have a buyout of some sort at FAU

If they only had a few more seconds on the clock and they end up beating us, would that change your mind?

I get that his resume isn't what most people would see as impressive, but I think he's an up and coming coach and I believe in buying low, not overpaying and buying hype.

He's a solid coach. I predict in a couple of years, he'll be coaching in a power 3 conference

No, not remotely. It isn't one game that makes me not want him. They lost 7 games this year, including to FIU who we beat by over 40. I'm sorry he just has absolutely no track record of success as a head coach.

I understand what you're saying about not overpaying and buying hype. That's why I'm kind of confused as to why you even brought him up. He's the epitome of a hype hire, what he's done well is coach high scoring offenses as a coordinator. He's done nothing as a head coach. But people see the high scoring offenses for teams he has coordinated and for some reason start salivating over his prospects as a head coach. What has he done as a HC to make you think he is a solid coach?
