For those that have not read and are interested in the depravity of the scheme at UNC the Wainstein report is pretty compelling reading. In the AAS major grades were handed out specifically to make players eligible. If an athlete needed an A to get his/her GPA above 2.0 (The eligibility mark for a semester) they got an A. If they needed a B they were given a B. Curiously enough no Cs were handed out. 319 documented cases of this ~6% documented against the Women's basketball team. That is 19 documented Times a UNC WBB player was given a grade they did not earn specifically so they would be eligible to play basketball. More amazing is that the first time the NCAA looked at this they concluded no NCAA violations had occurred.

. . . just published in an AP story that specifically mentions women's basketball.

Outlook very bleak for Coach Hatchell. And you know the Tarheels are in deep doo-doo with an AD named Bubba.

From what I've been reading, I get the vague feeling that the women's basketball
program will be hit hard, and the revenue producing sports (i.e. football and men's
hoops) will end up with probation or a similar slap on the wrist.

Did you think it would be otherwise? There's no way in hell that the money sports will be touched.

I dunno - men's basketball and football are the other most frequent abusers. They have been laying low with those 2 sports, and hammering the WBB program in the press. But I think when it all comes out Roy may be in deep doodoo.

everyone assumes the NCAA is a squeaky clean operation, not quite, it is a billion dollar business that is self serving.

I find this very suspicious. There seems to be leak after leak concerning women's basketball. Why would a University take these risks for a non revenue sport? What is it about the state of North Carolina and throwing women under the bus? Am I supposed to believe that all of this academic fraud centered around women's basketball? I would like to also know if Sylvia Hatchell is a victim or part of the cover up, with a golden parachute? For someone to imply that all of these girls transferring from UNC is due the new academic standards is absolutely despicable.

I am so infuriated I can no longer think clearly and must stop.

Funny how none of UNC's recruiting hasn't been affected much in terms of ALL major sports...

So if I understand correctly UNC was to have a report ready for the NCAA but then gets to delay bc more allegations are discovered? I applaud anyone trying to make things right but TO ME IMO it seems like this is a tactic to buy more time.

I am not making an allegation here...merely just expressing a thought

You must not have been paying attention the past few years... men's basketball recruiting has been in the toilet

I love the arrogance of UNC's position.

"We've done enough wrong that you we likely won't be able to play in the post season. We've been caught and we've been caught trying to hide it. But, since we think we've got a good shot at a MBB Natty, we are going to wait to the last minute to tell you that we've done even more wrong that you didn't catch and you can't punish us until after the MBBNC."

To recap, we've done enough wrong that we should not be allowed to compete in sports for a year or two, while we get our house in order, never mind participate in the NCAA tourney, but since it is worse than you know, we should be allowed to continue to field our sports teams and play in the tourney?

UNC uncovers more potential violations in academic scandal
(ESPN)

In preparing to release E-mails, additional woman's BB violations (among others) detected.

Is anyone surprised?

In the current world of no one is responsible for anything---UNC did nothing wrong!! They miss spoke. The computer put in the wrong grades, the server was over loaded, they miss read the report, the whole facility was sick that day, it was the job of the registrar, No one in Administration, the AD, or the Coaching staff had any idea this was happening , Student Athletes had no reason not to believe the grades or the courses they had taken. The Devil made them do it. UNC is not guilty of any NCAA violations!!! And I never lie!!

They hammered Penn State football, which produces more revenue than UNC football and basketball combined. And in that case, the NCAA didn't even have jurisdiction over the wrongdoing.

I haven't been following this at all, but just curious... have individual players that were recipients of these manufactured grades been named? I don't know and I'm not accusing anyone, but it does seem like players who've benefitted from academic fraud should be punished as well as UNC itself.

I agree that the players who benefited from cheating should also be punished but that has not been the case so far. At least two former UNC players ( One WCBB player) are suing both the NCAA and UNC for depriving them of a "proper education". The former UNC Women's basket player is Rashanda McCants. If the last name sounds familar it was her brother Rashad McCants who initially started to reveal the scandal in a interview in which he said he got grades for classes he never attended and other people turned in papers for him during his time at UNC.

That involved the abuse of young boys by a member of the football team's coaching staff. If you can't understand the difference between that and what is going on at North Carolina I can't help you.
