One of the major sadnesses of my life is that I never got to see UConn play in the Rufus Xavier Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl.

What is the bowl selection hierarchy? I recall being a bit miffed when UConn was technically bowl eligible in the early aughts with a 9-3 record, yet was passed over because of lack of conference.

On the other hand there were only 28 or so bowl games (56 spots) back then. There are now 86 spots and more than a few 5-7 teams have been declared "alternates (as opposed to "deserving)" in recent years. Also, I believe the PAC 12 does not allow 5-7 teams to accept bowl bids. So my question is are bowl committees required to extend invites to "deserving" teams, regardless of conference affiliation, prior to "alternates?"

If I recall correctly, the new rules stipulate (in the event of an insufficient number of eligible teams) that all 6 win teams must be placed.. then 5 win teams may be selected in APR order.
