After today's game ND has scored 330 points on Free Throws to 181 points for their Opponents.

149 more points from the Charity stripe.

In Comparison UConn has gone to the charity stripe 200 times and made 142. UConn's opponents have shot 164 free throws and made 118

A difference of only 24 points.

UConn fouls less then ND, but also can't get to the line nearly as often as ND does. The same thing happened in the Baylor game.

Both games UConn could have won if they take care of the ball down the stretch even with the foul disparity.

It's not just taking care of the ball, it's what players do with the ball when they have it. UCONN is [rightly] praised for it's high number of assists - we really put a lot of emphasis on ball movement, motion and fundamental plays where the offense itself generates a big % of the buckets. So in a sense, some of our assists can count against our lack of FT attempts.

For me it sort of gets back to Van Gundy's comment about UCONN not having much of a midrange game. We rely on the offense to create a high % of buckets but against teams like ND and WV this becomes much more difficult. At that point, there will be times when individuals have to step up and make some things happen from time to time. (Bria is alerady there....!.... lol) Not that you want 1-on-1 basketball all the time, just the aggressiveness to make some plays,. which can often get you to the line. Recently Geno said "I think we're playing OK as a team, but Stef, Kiah and Brianna Banks have to step up as individuals." I'm sure he was making a more general point than I am, but it's a similar sentiment.

Example: Geno used to exhort Maya to be more aggressive - you want your best player(s) to be aggressive, not your weakest offensive players. But the point is still the same. He wanted her to get to the line if that's the opportunity that an aggressive defense is giving you. Against ND, there was certainly that opportunity many times.

We will get better at attacking the pressure either by quick passing or dribble drive. ND pushed our offense way out today and we didn't exploit there pressure.

Oh please, it goes WAY beyond how aggressive UConn plays or doesn't play. This goes back more than a decade over multiple teams and many many players. ND ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS gets special treatment from the refs. Actually, it isn't even close or debatable. It is DISGUSTING the special treatment certain SCHOOLS get. Notre Dame and Duke are by far the worst. You can see it in the numbers but the numbers don't tell the whole story. It isn't just the foul or FT disparity. It is also the fouls that ND/Duke commit that don't get called. This game went to OT because of the turnovers that UConn committed at the end of the game and it wasn't all due to clean defense. There are fouls being committed during those "aggressive" defensive possessions by ND but they aren't being called. It is that simple.
