Those grown up players are now filling the arenas and boosting franchise values all these years after the Gretzky trade signaled the birth of the "sunbelt boom". You sound like the Connecticut legislature explaining the exodus of business from Connecticut
I was a Whalers fan, if that makes you feel any better, and still have not replaced them with any new "favorite" team. It's something called trends and basic business. Businesses grow by developing markets.

And the players are not grown up. Participation in the southeast as of 2013-14 is 10+ times what it was in 1990-91. Try reading and using reasonable logic.

How the (beep) are the Anaheim Ducks worth more than the Minnesota Wild? Proves my point, doesn't it?

youth participation has grown very well in non-traditional areas of the US and that is great for USA Hockey. but in terms of making a strong NHL (attendance and TV exposure) going south has been just that....
