Seems like a tough environment right now to portal.

What's notable to me is the fact the Orange are changing defensive schemes this year - something to keep an eye on when football returns: "However, Syracuse is implementing a new 3-3-5 defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Tony White"

The Transfer Portal continues to change the way college football programs recruit and manage their rosters.

Some programs have really jumped on the portal as part of their roster building strategy....and Edsall might have more opportunities if he made that more a priority. But he is on the record as saying he would rather go the high school and juco route. Not that there is anything wrong with that...a traditional approach that has been proven.

Some programs are jumping on transfers as a recruiting tool...the portal use varies from just filling a roster hole to using the portal as major part of recruiting. Depending on need.

Examples below:

....Ohio State has selectively used a few transfers to strategically fill roster holes....a very limited targeted strategy.... a needed RB from Oklahoma, Justin Fields at QB, and Jonah Jackson from Rutgers who started for the Buckeyes and was named All Big Ten.

....FSU, who needed far more than the Buckeyes, has gone in wholesale

Norvell at FSU hasn't played a game yet...but has jumped on the portal.

...FSU has added 9 D-I transfers since Norvell arrived: DB Jarrian Jones (Miss. St.), DB Meiko Dotson (FAU), DT Fabien Lovett (Miss. St.), DL Jarrett Jackson (Louisville), RB Jashaun Corbin (TexA&M), OL Devontay Love-Taylor (FIU), LB Cornel Jones (Purdue), DE Deonte Williams (Baylor) and TE Jordan Wilson (UCLA).

I guess we'll see how Norvell's strategy eventually plays out.

I think that we will see the transfer incorporated by more and more teams in roster management. Some to fill a roster hole...and some as a part of the recruitment of classes.

Held a Diaco UConn offer but was also recruited by Maryland when Edsall was there.

Assuming he is a grad transfer. Any idea how much eligibility he would have left?

Strange place to land to sit out a year (unless he figured out a grad transfer route or transfer waiver loophole):

CJ Holmes was a walk on at Penn State...should be immediately eligible. Could not crack third /fourth string with PSU.

He has had a tough road...kicked off the Irish squad for shoplifting, walking on at Penn state and not making playing time cut.....and now to Kent state

Grad transfer w/ two years eligibility left.

Cool....NBC hadn't clarified that he was a grad transfer...but I don't think it matters since he was not on a scholarship.

NBC....It’s unclear of Holmes will be leaving the Nittany Lions as a graduate. If so, he’ll have two years of eligibility he can begin using immediately. If not, he’d have to sit out 2020 at an FBS school. That would leave him a year to use in 2021.

The Roar Lions (PSU) site also was not sure...

If he again has to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, he will have one season of eligibility remaining.

But Black Shoes Diary confirms he was a 4th string walk on...

Holmes transferred to Penn State as a walk on. While there was a lot of belief that he would eventually be put on scholarship, that never happened. So, his transfer will not impact Penn State’s scholarship number which still sits at 86, one above the NCAA limit.

247 confirms walk on status...

He’s the third Penn State walk-on to enter the Transfer Portal this month, as redshirt freshman offensive lineman Dalton Daddonna and redshirt freshman linebacker Denver Light both entered during the first week of June.
