NCAA Tourney games

To those griping about pro-UCONN whistle swallowing, I profoundly disagree. Yes, the refs called very few fouls in the 1st half, but, IMO, they called it the same for both UCONN and a very good, physical and defensively active UNC squad.
What the refs didn't do is fall for 4 different UNC flops. This may be what the anti-Conn crowd is reacting to.

If this were the national championship game, I would be for Duke. With UCLA looming though; I have to go with LSU. I think they are the team that can give UCLA more of a challenge.

Wait a minute. Duke put up 47...in the first half?! This is Duke we're talking about, right? This is not what I expected. I could have foreseen them winning if the final score was in the 50s.
Revenge game for Duke, as the talking heads have been saying.

Looks like Duke is putting a scare into LSU, up 47-40nat halftime. We’ll see if they can hold on to it.

The camera work in Sacramento is a lot more dynamic than Fort Worth. Lots of tighter views and closeups. Not just in replays.

One thing that stands out is all the ‘jawboning’ from LSU. There’s a lot of stress on them in this game, I imagine. But the taunting seems extreme. I wonder if a technical is coming. I suspect this is an ongoing feature of LSU team culture.

4th quarter and Duke is taking LSU to the woodshed on offense. Up by 11, 78-67. Some of it is making LSU play D for the full 30 seconds on several possessions in a row. And on defense it’s a slew of blocked shots. Duke is a tall lanky team, lots of long arms and quick hands. They look to be bigger than LSU even when Koval is on the floor.

lol Fulwiley was better than Johnson all year, but Kim wouldn’t sit her senior for crunch time. Way to keep that locker room happy, Coach!

Who was it that kept pointing out that LSU had a poor record against good teams? Oh yeah that was me. And I know they beat Duke early in the season, but the Devils clearly weren't a good team at the time. They improved significantly over the course of the season.

Also, Mulkey's M.O. is pretty much win the Championship, or underachieve relative to her seed. This was not a Championship team, so I guess it had to be the second option this year.

Nobody beats DUKE twice in a season

Congrats to Duke! They had a good plan, scored plenty of points, valued posessions and won the hustle plays.

LSU wouldn't quit and kept coming back. They will regret the 10-20 silly posessions that created a 1 score finish.

Two instant classics today with ND v Vandy and this one. The last shot does not even need slo-mo to be on that rim a looonggg time.

Duke v UCLA, another classic?

I don't have anything against UCONN. I just saw there were 0 fouls called in the entire 1Q and then for about a 6-minute stretch of 2Q, I thought UCONN could've been called for a foul on just about every UNC possession, often multiple times on the same one.

I won’t say any national championships are won off luck, but short of an unexpected 2023 title, LSU has finished each season under Mulkey with like 30 wins and nothing else to show for it.

Nothing to show? Lots of hype and attention, that has to be worth something...

Saw Mulkey during the UCLA game. There's just something about her. Always happy when her team loses.

Almost everybody has a “bad record” against good teams. Here’s the top 3 seeds vs Massey top 25 before the Sweet 16. (+x) indicates losses to teams outside the top 25.

Only one team seems to be a potential outlier relative to seed peers, and it’s not LSU.

UCLA 13-1
South Carolina 13-3
Texas 12-3
UConn 6-0

Michigan 8-5 (+1)
Vandy 7-3
LSU 6-5
Iowa 6-5 (+1)

Duke 6-7
TCU 5-2 (+3)
Ohio State 5-7
Louisville 5-6 (+1)

True on Mulkey although they’re coming off back to back Elite 8s as a 3 seed. If Mulkey gets to the Final 4, she’s 4 for 5 in winning a title. And 4-0 in championship games.
