“Once the NCAA evaluated that additional academic performance data, assessed our ASU Academic Improvement Plan and reviewed us according to its Limited Resource Institution component, the NCAA staff determined that ASU will not be penalized,” acting athletic director Melvin Hines said in a statement.

UConn should have used that reasoning. I mean they were limited. They had 1 compliance person and a feeble AD. :)

It is amazing to me that the NCAA has a different set of rules for some schools. Who at the NCAA makes the determination which schools have limited resources? If you want to be D1 then follow the rules, no matter how stupid they are. UConn didn't get any of these breaks and neither should anyone else.

Saw this earlier and it pissed be off beyond belief. What a Joke!!!!!!

It makes sense that you wouldn't want to ban the schools with limited resources because of a bogus set of metrics. O the other hand, why create a bogus set of metrics?

So that you give academic cover for the farce that is collegiate athletics.

The reasoning is entirely logical and cynical. You can't poke a hole through it. So much of the world today is about appearances. There is little substance to this. No media member or fan is going to be upset if the bogus metrics do not apply to small schools with limited resources.

what a fcuking joke. Not like it matters for them anyways- but still.

College athletics is pageantry. What do you expect?

Tell me race didn't play a role.

They got off free like all the other HBCUs.

How hard did your knee jerk on that one?

The HBCU's are among the first schools that will collapse because of lack of funds. Howard is about to totally implode, and arguably, that's the best one. Here we have a host of schools that don't even have the funds to keep running, never mind comply with the NCAA.

Then they should drop sports immediately.

I don't care that Alabama State's penalty was rescinded.

After a bit of reading, it's very, very clear that while UConn received dismissive waves on any and all appeals, ASU received the benefit of the doubt to the nth degree. ASU wasn't even keeping records at some point and while they submitted an APR improvement plan, UConn submitted a plan that was A) working and B) meticulously detailed.

As with the Oregon/NCAA case, it's pretty obvious that UConn should just have cheated on their APR reporting.
