That’s the biggest issue in my opinion. You could have a 3 or more team tie for first (although unlikely). The thing is for major conferences it doesn’t matter because if you’re tied for first there’s a 95%+ chance you’re getting in anyway. But for your low and mid-majors it’s a massive difference.

It could be neat to have it be an auto-bid for an outright regular season champ, but if it’s a tie then the auto-bid gets pushed to the tournament champ.

Auto bid goes to whichever team does better in the conference tourney. If it's still a tie, give the bid to the tourney champion.

I like this idea, but what would you say is the ideal tiebreaker for regular season champs?

#1 would be head to head. You can’t really use tournament because who knows if they’ll play each or what will happen. Every league has a system to break ties for its tourney seeding. I would just use that.
