The biggest issue in either scenario is what does Field of 68 do? Would they have to rebrand and lose all the brand equity they have built? Or keep the brand and have a name that makes no sense. Tough one...

What is this, Hockey? Just go 128. It will still be well below the 50% of NHL teams the make the playoffs.
And make the final the best of 3. This way we can watch college basketball till June.

64 was perfect. I'm assuming only the P4 conferences were complaining about it so they could squeeze more teams in around the automatic qualifiers?
Yeah because nothing says excitement like the 12th team from the B10 playing #14 from the B12. Especially if both have losing records. But strength of schedule. Strength of schedule. Wins and losses are so last Century.

Yep. And all one of these #14 teams need to do is pull one lucky tourney win out of their crapper to justify the expansion.

Just make it the Field of 150.

Just go to 96 and save us all the wait. This inch by inch nonsense is awful. You are bound and determined to wreck the tournament. Just get it over with. First round byes to the SEC, ACC,Big10 & 12.
He said the tournament is unlikely to grow any bigger than 76 because of the limited window they have to schedule games between the time when conference championships end and coverage of the Masters begins.

There is almost a week between conference championships and the tournament start... with 128 teams, it's just 1 more game. Can easily squeeze one in.

either 72 or 76 makes sense.

first make the other two 16 seeds play-ins. that's 70 teams. then make the other two 11 seeds play-ins. that's 72. and then make all four 10 seeds play-ins. thats 76.

of course whichever seed lines are play-ins will change every year depending on where the last 8 bubble teams get seeded. usually tho it will be the 11 and 10 seeds.

This Makes No Sense. Going to 96 would take the same 2 days that the Dayton Games take now.

They always find room to add more. If it means $$$$, they'll just start the season earlier.

Yeah that's not bad, but I just want them to stick to 68 teams. Not that these guys like Charlie Baker and other execs give a fukk about my thoughts on tournament expansion.

It doesn't matter how many teams are in the NCAAT. If the field is 96 teams or 128 teams, teams deemed to be the last 4 out will bitch and moan that they are better than the last 4 teams that got in.

It’s not just 1 more game, it’s twice as many games. You’re basically playing 2 current tournament’s worth of games.

Not a math guy? 2^7 =128. 2^6=64. It’s literally 1 game.

Throwing some teams into playin games for 11 and 12 seeds is not going to be earth shattering. Expand, don’t expand, whatever.

?? Again, the current tournament has 67 total games to determine a champion. In a 128 team tournament there would be 64 games just in the new first round. You’re saying they are somehow going to fit an entire NCAA tournament‘s worth of games into the small window between the end of the conference tournaments and the normal start of the tournament. It’s not a video game, there are real life logistical aspects to things.

One is talking ‘rounds’ the other is talking games.

The first round currently is 32 games after the play ins (64 teams)

If you go to 128, that first round is 64 games.

Seems like they just want to find a way to have every power conference school in the field.

On the other and, if the larger field generates more money that could be good for UConn. The more money basketball brings to the table, the better for the Huskies.

There is no way they would do it by having a preponderance of play-in games for the at-larges.

The whole point is the P4 wants to squeeze out the low majors. They'll make all the 15 seeds play a play-in game before a single 10 seed.
