If a player goes into the stands and makes verbal, physical or other type of confrontation they will have a flagrant non-contact foul 2 and automatic ejection.

I just wish they put more thought in the rule instead of a knee jerk reaction. It happened one damn time in the history of college basketball and may never happen again for many many years. I'm sure many kids have been held back by players and coaches from responding (verbally or just to engage), but this appears to apply even if they make an attempt.

Would this apply to Khalid if back in the day? linky

I think the reason is not because they think it will happen again, but that the current rules didn't handle it right. I think everyone was kinda surprised he wasn't ejected, but there wasn't any rule explicitly to eject him by.

I don't understand what you mean about it covering "attempts". You either leave the court and confront a fan or you don't. If you don't leave the court, this won't apply.

this is pretty much how a bureaucracy always handles things. If there is something which is not covered because it almost never happens, when it does they immediately make a new rule. Then it will be applied to an incident where it was never intended to apply, maybe in a couple of years, and there will be an argument about whether it should be changed to somehow apply to that new situation.

An automatic ejection for going into the stands should have been in place a long time ago.

But they often make it.

Probably true, but it is so rare and at least in the current instance the school and the conference took action, did they not? Do we really need a rule for something that has happened exactly once in anyone's memory? And how long before someone trips or gets pushed or jumps or ends up there some other way without malicious intent and "has to be suspended because of the rule?"

Speaking of the NCAA, according to the Daily Oklahoman OU reported that 3 football players ate too much pasta at a banquet. As part of its self imposed penalty, the players were required to donate $3.83 to charity. The following is from the report:
May 10, 2013

Violation: Three current student-athletes received food in excess of NCAA regulation at a graduation banquet. The three had graduated from the school but returned for an additional season of competition. The players were provided pasta in excess of the permissible amount allowed. Resolution: The three were required to donate $3.83 each (the cost of the pasta serving) to a charity of their choice in order to be reinstated. The department provided rules education to applicable athletics department staff members.

FYI, you'll be happy to know that the NCAA subsequently notified OU that they have no rules at this time governing the size of a helping of pasta. they are however suspending Ryan Boatright for 2 games anyway.

They better not end up using this rule miserably, like say a player dives out for a loose ball and ends up in the stands, on his home court. If he gives a fan a high five on his way back in, there better be no way he can be ejected for that

Good thing they don't have limits on how much alcohol you can receive at frat parties.
